A Salute to the Ingenuity of American Nurses

It is particularly fitting, as we struggle with the challenges of COVID-19, to pause and observe National Nurses Week.

The ingenuity and contributions of American nurses in health care and technology have long been a beacon of light.

Unemployment Soars to 14.7% as America Loses 20.5 Million More Jobs

To help guide policymakers around the nation on reopening, we've assembled the National Coronavirus Recovery Commission. The goal: Save lives, but also livelihoods. The commission so far has put forward 179 recommendations that strike a prudent balance between the two.

As we begin to see states move closer to reopening, it is important we provide business owners with policies and procedures that help welcome back their employees.

To see these high unemployment numbers fall, we must immediately start the balancing act between lives and livelihoods.

A U.S.–Mexico-Canada (USMCA) Economic Partnership Recovery Plan

North America’s economic comeback hinges on adhering to the principles of economic freedom that launched the region’s prosperity, alleviating Mexico’s health crisis, and using the new U.S.–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA) as a framework for economic growth.

The three North American trade partners—the United States, Mexico, and Canada—have been hard hit by the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Radical OSTP Proposal Would Undermine American Research and Sacrifice American Intellectual Property

The Trump Administration should not permit the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) to eviscerate the key constitutional and economic function of copyright law by forcing U.S. intellectual property owners to give away their copyrighted works for free to China and the rest of the world.

Nor should it allow the OSTP to contradict its own policies on trade and IP. It should join with those who have already raised serious legal, policy, and economic concerns about the OSTP proposal.

The Administration should reject the OSTP proposal and reaffirm the vital role that copyright serves in securing the fruits of the productive labors of those who create and disseminate journal articles.

Over the past three years, the Trump Administration has placed a high priority on protecting American intellectual property (IP) from foreign theft—especially by China. The Administration’s concern about protecting U.S. creators and innovators is one of the principal reasons for its trade war wi...

Heritage Expert: It’s Time to Begin Getting Americans Safely Back to Work

Government-imposed shutdowns have had a devastating impact on tens of millions of Americans—at least 1 in 5 losing their jobs over just eight weeks. At the same time, the private sector has also acted on its own in response to the virus and businesses all around the country have closed absent government restrictions.

The lives and livelihoods of Americans are deeply intertwined; we can and must save both. Heritage’s National Coronavirus Recovery Commission recommends a locally driven, data-informed reopening of American society, so we can begin getting Americans safely back to work.

WASHINGTON—Today’s jobs report shows the unemployment rate at 14.7%. Combined with recent weekly information, the true unemployment rate is almost certainly above 20% and could reach 25%. Rachel Greszler, Heritage Foundation research fellow in budget and entitlements, made the following statemen...

NATO’s Role in Pandemic Response

The responsibility for maintaining the health and safety of their armed forces lies with individual member states, not with NATO.

That is not to say that NATO does not have a role to play in pandemic response, and member states heavily affected by COVID-19 quickly turned to the Alliance for assistance.

NATO’s response to the coronavirus pandemic thus far has shown that the Alliance can indeed play a positive supporting role in helping member states respond to health emergencies, especially in the transatlantic community.

Heritage Explains

In this week’s episode of our "Heritage Explains" podcast, Nick Loris discusses a new report that spells out what the U.S. needs to do to not only increase its Index of Economic Freedom ranking, but also to increase the quality of life for our families.

Given the rebuilding that must take place after COVID-19, now is the time to implement these ideas of more freedom and less government.

This week, Nick Loris talks about a new Heritage report that explains why economic freedom matters more now than ever.

Religion and American Civil Society

Against Washington’s warning, we have excluded religious principle from our national morality. And in so doing, we have shaken the foundation on which our society was built, with terrible results.

This corrosion can be corrected, if we so choose, and restoring religion’s role in our civil society—in our homes, communities, and country—is a critically important place to start.

More than 200 years ago, in his 1796 farewell Presidential address, George Washington issued a stern warning. He described religion and morality as “indispensable supports,” the “great pillars of human happiness,” and the “firmest props of the duties of men and citizens,” and, prophetica...

USPS Needs Major Reforms, Not a Bailout

USPS was on the road to financial collapse long before the COVID-19 pandemic. Its operations haven’t adapted to changing consumer preferences, and Congress carries much of the blame.

Even though USPS is supposed to operate as a self-sustaining entity, lawmakers have politicized USPS rather than allowing it to manage itself.

The False Promise of Stimulus Spending: Lessons from the Great Recession

The economic damage following COVID-19 has already led to bipartisan calls for more aggressive federal stimulus programs to jump-start economic recovery.

A program of stimulus spending would be misguided. Estimates of the effectiveness of fiscal stimulus show that it does not boost private activity or increase total output.

As the U.S. economy has undergone a severe suppression of activity to fight COVID-19, a novel coronavirus that originated in Wuhan, China, federal programs of direct payments, tax credits, and loans are acting as a kind of floor for the economy to rest on as we give the pandemic health response time...

Presidential Prayers: Turning to God in Times of Need

Prayer is integral to America.

On this #NationalDayOfPrayer, we echo President Lincoln's 1863 proclamation and prayer for peace and unity as we pray for all Americans impacted by COVID-19.

Since the founding of the Republic, Americans have appealed to God in times of crisis. From George Washington to Donald Trump, our presidents have been no exception. Over Half of U.S. Counties Have Had No COVID-19 Deaths

Although all U.S. states have reported cases of COVID-19, the distribution of the cases and deaths has remained heavily concentrated in a small number of states, and among a small number of counties within all states.

With many state and local governments starting to relax stay-at-home orders, it’s instructive to examine just how concentrated the spread of COVID-19 has been in the U.S. Although all U.S. states have reported cases of COVID-19, the distribution of the cases and deaths has remained heavily concent...
