SYNOPSIS: Chronicling the extraordinary rise of one of the most colorful and controversial religious movements in American history, HAIL SATAN? is an inspiring and entertaining new feature documentary from acclaimed director Penny Lane (Nuts!, Our Nixon). When media-savvy members of the Satanic Temple organize a series of public actions designed to advocate for religious freedom and challenge corrupt authority, they prove that with little more than a clever idea, a mischievous sense of humor, and a few rebellious friends, you can speak truth to power in some truly profound ways. As charming and funny as it is thought-provoking, HAIL SATAN? offers a timely look at a group of often misunderstood outsiders whose unwavering commitment to social and political justice has empowered thousands of people around the world.

Q&A with director Penny Lane in conversation with Lucien Greaves, head of The Satanic Temple on Wed. 6/10 at 8:00 pm ET. You can submit your questions by email to [email protected], or you can tweet at us using the hashtag #magnoliadocseries. Next film in the series - BLACKFISH available beginning May 29
Pre-order your ticket here - https://watch.eventive.org/blackfishmovie/play/5ebdec98c9a906005cb0d032
SYNOPSIS: Many of us have experienced the excitement and awe of watching 8,000 pound orcas, or “killer whales,” soar out of the water and fly through the air at sea parks, as if in perfect harmony with their trainers. Yet this mighty black and white mammal has many sides – a majestic, friendly giant, seemingly eager to take trainers for a ride around the pool, yet shockingly – and unpredictably – able to turn on them at a moment’s notice. BLACKFISH unravels the complexities of this dichotomy, employing the story of notorious performing whale Tilikum, who – unlike any orca in the wild – has taken the lives of several people while in captivity. So what went wrong?

Q&A with director Gabriela Cowperthwaite on Wed. 6/3 at 8:00pm ET. You can submit your questions by email to [email protected], or you can tweet at us using the hashtag #magnoliadocseries. Kerry Washington announces today’s AFI Movie Club selection: THE COLOR PURPLE. The film, based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, ranks #51 on AFI’s list of the most inspiring films in American history. Director Steven Spielberg was the recipient of the AFI Life Achievement Award in 1995.

DID YOU KNOW? Alice Walker’s contract stipulated she would serve as project consultant and that 50% of the production team – aside from the cast – would be African American, female or “people of the Third World.” After the film’s release, the NAACP praised the production for employing more African American actors and filmmakers than any motion picture to date since SOUNDER.

By, Kirk T. Schroder, Esq. IMPORTANT FOR VIRGINIA producers and filmmakers. There is an important and significant change in Virginia law beginning July 1st regarding the classification of employees and independent contractors. As some of you know, many productions classify crew, talent and others as independent contractors. The new law in Virginia starting July 1st, now protects persons who are misclassified as an independent contractor (instead of being classified as an employee). The new law allows the misclassified employee to sue the employer (e.g. the production company or filmmaker) to recover lost wages and benefits, expresses that should have been covered by insurance, other lost compensation and attorneys’ fees and costs. The new law will create a presumption that anyone who performs services for remuneration is an employee, shifting the burden to the production company to show that the worker is an independent contractor under IRS guidelines. If the employer misclassified employees and failed to pay employment taxes, this new law also allows the VA tax commissioner to impose a civil penalty, bar government contracts for the company and report the violation to other Virginia agencies.
