Shots from last week’s scramble at Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, raising money for Volare.

Joined by three contributors to Issue No. 1 of BG Magazine, Robby Runyan , Austin Kaseman & Ryan Parsons, the last two both contributing photographers on the issue. So while the focus was having a good time and trying to make birdies, it’s fun to see what the different cameras caught out there. Frames 3-9 are Austin & 11-17 are Ryan.

The Arlington campus is 27 holes in the heart of Arlington, inside the Beltway, with I-395 running along its eastern border. The clubhouse and range sit atop a hill, the golf course falling away down the sides. Members get another 27 at the Fairfax campus, 54 holes across the club.

Exciting news here that next month the membership votes on a proposed renovation of the 27 holes here in Arlington from Andrew Green. The master plan and hole by hole renderings are on display in the clubhouse. (Frame 20)

Make sure to stop at Slide 10 where Austin comes damn close to acing the par 4 first on the Red.

Walked Baltimore Country Club today for the U.S. Senior Amateur. Easy to see why the East Course at Five Farms is always in the conversation for the very best in Maryland. Huge greens, golden age bunkering and a routing laid out over rolling terrain that plays long.

The clubhouse is dynamite … the patio bar & pro shop are just about perfect and everywhere you turn there is a chair or a barstool that begs you to sit down in it. And the crab soup was phenomenal.

Eight players left after today. Two after tomorrow. The final is Thursday.

Admission is free, no ticket needed, parking is free.

Enjoyed a round out at Stoneleigh Golf & CC with a BG Magazine subscriber (cheers Matt!). The Loudoun County club is one of those courses that seems to be crucial to have someone who knows it guiding you along.

The property itself has some stunning views, an old stone farmhouse turned clubhouse tavern, tons of stone walls throughout, and a red cart barn that dates back to the Civil War. The layout was designed by Lisa Maki in 1992, a rare female architect in this industry, who also did Hampshire Greens in Montgomery County.

Plenty of elevation change out there with the second hole being a straight climb, right out of the gate. The routing does get tight in spots and the course rewards knowing where to miss, which is exactly the kind of thing a member helps out with. Without the local knowledge, I could see it being a bit frustrating on the first go-round, but a ton more fun the more you play it.

Walking the course is a workout (we didnt), it’s got plenty of character, and a cozy little 19th hole pub that a great way to wrap the outing.

The September 1 date for East Potomac is less than a week away, and there is little to no information about what will happen on Tuesday…if anything at all.

Tree removal has ramped up over the past few days. Several golfers have sent us photos of trees coming down throughout the course, some that needed to (like slide 1) and others that appeared healthy. We went down ourselves earlier today and confirmed that one of the cherry trees left of the 14th green was taken down (slide 2). We also confirmed it was not on the approved list of dead or dying trees to come down.

As for Tuesday, nobody really knows.

At the last court hearing, both the judge and the DOI lawyer made clear that the administration would complete the necessary compliance procedures before starting any renovation, including review by the National Capital Planning Commission. East Potomac is not on next week’s NCPC agenda.

A separate Section 106 historic preservation review is also required. A stakeholder call on that process was cancelled earlier this month by the administration and has not been rescheduled.

One read on neither of those reviews happening is that they will not be moving forward on Tuesday. Another is that the administration skips the compliance steps and starts anyway, forcing a stop-work order from the judge and moving the case to an appeal sooner.

We will be teeing it up Monday afternoon regardless.

Enjoyed an 18 hole stroll this past Friday at Crossvines, the property formerly known as Poolesville Golf Course before the winery and bistro arrived in 2023.

Surrounded by the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve, not a house anywhere in sight, the place has a genuinely idyllic rural feel. Perfect for walking, with very little elevation change. But can play long with dense rough that limits any roll and the back tees stretch past 6,800 yards.

The design itself isn’t super memorable, but the conditions that have been fantastic in recent years, along with the setting make for a downright pleasant round of golf.

And the course will be forever tied to Hootie and his Blowfish who filmed the video to this song on the property back in the mid-90s.

Monterey Country Club sits a mile above the Maryland line and roughly eight miles from Camp David.

The nine-holer dates back to 1885, which puts it among the in the country. The ground saw cavalry skirmishing during the Confederate retreat from Gettysburg through Monterey Pass in 1863. Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge and Dwight Eisenhower all played here.

Caught it earlier this summer just as a local ladies church group was setting up for night golf, hence the white lightsticks ringing the greens.
