Recent social media policy changes allow dehumanizing and ableist language to be used against others under the guise of political discourse. Using ableist langauge against our allies is opposed to the very values at the core of EAPM as an organization and as individuals.

What would you do if you couldn’t get information? If you couldn’t read it, hear it, see it, or understand it? News is moving more and more online along with news consumers, but barriers persist.
• More than 28% of Americans are disabled and more than half of American adults have a chronic illness that affects their ability to see, hear, read, or understand.
• The average reading level of American adults is 6th grade.
• 37 million Americans live at or below the poverty line.

These are just some of the facts that make getting news difficult.

We have a solution. A news site where every news story is available in text, audio, video, sign language and more. And it's never behind a paywall.

Right now, we're running our Winter Fundraiser. We need your help to raise $10 thousand by Jan. 1.

Thank you so much!

Equal Access Public Media is proud to recognize National Disability Employment Awareness Month as an accessibility-first organization.

According to the U.S. Office of Disability Policy, companies and organizations identified "as leaders in disability inclusion had, on average: 1.6 times more revenue, 2.6 times more net income, and 2 times more economic profit than their counterparts."

But why does EAPM go all-in on accessible employment? Because being all about accessibility means better jobs in the news industry and more accessible news for everyone.

We're so excited to announce our new EAPM Board of Directors:

• Ola Ojewumi, who has been with EAPM since the very beginning
• Tobias Brevik who will also serve as Vice President
• Britne Jenke who will also serve as Secretary
• Stacy Kess, who is also the founder of EAPM

This is more than a board of directors. This is a team that believes in the EAPM accessibility first mission, and each brings a pillar of knowledge to that mission. EAPM has a strong foundation for the future.

Allow us to reintroduce ourselves...

In the spirit of news sources such as Capital B and National Native News, Equal Access Public Media (EAPM) is seeking to reach an often excluded, forgotten, and underprivileged community spread across the country rather than in one small zip code. EAPM, a year-old project recently fiscally sponsored by Alternative Newsweekly Foundation, seeks to make national news and local news of national interest accessible by making jobs in the journalism industry – from the newsroom to the operations side – accessible.

Roughly a quarter of American adults self-identify as disabled and about a half of Americans have a chronic illness. These disabilities and illnesses can affect how people see, hear, move, communicate, and process information. Likewise, they can often affect people's employment. Unemployment among disabled people – 7.2 percent – is more than double that of nondisabled adults, and disabled people report feeling fear of asking for accommodations at work and facing consequences up to termination when they do. We seek to create more accommodating jobs for people in the news industry with flexible schedules, available accommodations and technology, and work-from-almost-anywhere jobs. For our audiences, we seek to use multimedia presentations of news online and employ WCAG standards; universal design, include audio description tracks on video for our blind and low vision audience; include American Sign Language translations on audio, video, and text for our deaf and hard-of-hearing population – up to 1 million of whom use ASL as their primary language; and employ plain language and Easy Read in new and creative ways.

We are seeking start-up funding and support from partners to launch our first publication: a weekday online publication covering national news and partnering with local nonprofit news media (online, print, audio, and video) around the country to redistribute news in our accessible model. To do this, we need funding to hire our first staff members, including journalists and editors and accessibility experts.

Maybe you're that partner. Maybe you're that donor. Or maybe you have a spare $5. However you can help, we'd love you to be a part of EAPM.

Why make news accessible?
Because a quarter of U.S. adults self-identify as disabled and about half of U.S. adults have a chronic illness. These disabilities and illnesses can affect the way people see, hear, communicate, move, and process information. But we all deserve access to the information about what's going on in our country like elections, what our government is doing, what companies are doing, about the Olympics, about scientific breakthroughs, about trends, and about investigations.

Why make jobs in journalism accessible?
Because people with disabilities and chronic illnesses are just as capable of being editors, reporters, social media managers, publishers, accountants, designers, photographers, videographers, web designers, coders, HR professional, and all the other people that make an online publication work when jobs are flexible enough and build with the understanding of disabilities and chronic illnesses.

Help us build an accessibility-first news organization. We are EAPM.
