I agreed to marry a stranger because my phone battery died. That sentence alone should tell you my life was already unstable before that day. I was stuck in a bus terminal at 9pm, rain pouring like the sky was angry at me personally, phone at 1%, wallet missing, and my boyfriend of three years had just texted “we need to talk” which in relationship language means “I have already decided something without you.” I was pacing, panicking, trying not to cry in public when a man sat beside me and said, “If you’re about to break down, at least breathe first.” I didn’t look at him. I just said, “My life is collapsing and I don’t have data to Google how to fix it.” He laughed. Not loudly. Softly. Like someone who understood chaos. He asked if I was okay. I said no. He asked if I wanted company. I said maybe. We talked like two people with nothing to lose. He bought me food. Let me charge my phone. Listened without interrupting. When my phone finally came back on, there were 17 missed calls from my boyfriend. I ignored all of them. The stranger asked why I stayed. I said because for the first time in a long while, I wasn’t being managed or tolerated, just heard. When my bus was announced, I stood up, thanked him, and said goodbye. He stood up too and said something strange: “If you ever need a reset, come back here on the same date next year.” I laughed and said life doesn’t work like movies. He smiled and said, “Sometimes it does.” I left. I didn’t ask his name. I went back to my boyfriend. We tried again. It failed louder. I moved cities. Changed jobs. Grew older in ways mirrors don’t show. Exactly one year later, without planning to, I found myself at the same terminal. Same bench. Same rain. I don’t even believe in signs, but my chest felt heavy. He was there. Same calm face. Same quiet smile. He said, “You came.” I said, “I don’t know why.” We talked again. Longer. Deeper. No pretending this time. Before I left, he said, “I’m getting married next month.” My heart dropped before I could control it. I smiled and congratulated him because pride sometimes moves faster than pain. He paused and said, “I don’t want to.” I told him that wasn’t my business. He said, “It is if you say yes.” I laughed because that sentence made no sense. He explained slowly. His marriage was arranged. Practical. Safe. Loveless. He had one chance to choose differently, but only if someone chose him too. I told him he was insane. He told me maybe. I went home confused. Couldn’t sleep. Couldn’t breathe properly. Two weeks later, I showed up at the registry office he mentioned. Not because I believed in fairy tales, but because regret terrifies me more than mistakes. He was there. Alone. Nervous. We didn’t kiss. We didn’t cry. We signed papers like two people stepping into fire willingly. People think the twist is that we fell in love. It’s not. The twist is that love didn’t come first. Trust did. Safety did. Choice did. Love arrived later, quietly, like something that had been waiting for permission.
