As an aspiring filmmaker ten years ago, Docs In Progress’ Work In Progress screenings offered me a window into a profession I only dreamed of pursuing. Tonight at George Washington University! Docs In Progress Work In Progress Screening! Looking forward to seeing these films!

“Is there an alternative to the Western media gloom and doom portrayal of Africa?” This is the question comedian Dave Moktoi sets out to answer in this film which combines elements of personal essay, ethnography, and mockumentary. On a journey to his homeland of Cameroon, aka “Mini-Africa,” Moktoi explores the competition between Western culture and African culture.

Since May 2004, Docs In Progress has provided an opportunity for local and visiting documentary filmmakers to screen their unfinished films to an audience and get valuable feedback.

An Ambitious List of 1400 Films Made by Female Filmmakers

It’s a truism to say that Hollywood is a boy’s club but Dr. Stacy L. Smith of the University of Southern California put this saying into stark, empirical terms: a mere 4.4% of the top 100 box-office releases in the USA were directed by women. That’s it.

Recently, Thinking Forward Media scripted produced and edited this video for the Department of Homeland Security's IED information portal, TRIPWire. Using stock imagery, propaganda videos from terrorist groups, and motion graphics, we sought to highlight the very real threat of IEDs both home and abroad. The site is a massive information resource to military, security, and intelligence professionals working to stop IED attacks before they happen.

JANUARY 8th, 2015 - The Last Song Before The War will be released worldwide on DVD & Vimeo On Demand. Check out our FB Page as we will be posting photos and quotes about the Festival au Désert every day leading up to the release.

This week we will be sharing quotes from artists, musicians, and participants from the Festival in the Desert leading up to the DVD & Vimeo Release on 1/8/2015.

Ahmad Ag Kaedi, Group Amanar:
“The first statement we can make about this festival is that it interests many people, especially the Kel Tamasheq (Touaregs). It’s a great chance for us, emerging artists. With the press, we have the possibility to express ourselves, like right now with total confidence and say the truth. And also, to play our music, that travels to the other end of the world and meets other cultures that will in time recognize us, and will in that way understand us and adhere to our cause."

City of Trees: A Documentary About Green Jobs & Justice

So proud of our friends at Meridian Hill Pictures who have raised almost $20,000 in the first week of their Kickstarter campaign for the documentary City of Trees. The film takes a human look at the lifecycle of one stimulus project working to create green jobs and reduce unemployment in DC.

Consider taking a minute to check out the campaign and support if you can.

With ‘Selma,’ Ava DuVernay Seeks a Different Equality

Great article about making it as female director.

"Ms. DuVernay started directing first in documentary, where budgets tend to be low, and you don’t necessarily need to ask anyone’s permission, two reasons so many women may gravitate to the field."

Can't wait to see "Selma"!

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/07/movies/ava-duvernay-makes-a-mark-with-selma.html?ref=movies&_r=0

With her civil rights movie, “Selma,” Ava DuVernay has done what few female directors get the opportunity to do: go large — with politics and history, with serious muscle.
