Stacia Moffett - As we close out Women's History Month, we celebrate the powerful voices of women who have shaped history, both through real-life contributions and the stories they share through literature. One such voice is Author Stacia Moffett, whose gripping novels The Missing Girl and Jessa’s Back take readers on a deep, emotional journey into the complexities of race, identity, and history.
In The Missing Girl, set in rural Radford, Tennessee, during the 1950s, we follow Jessa, a young girl who flees after the tragic deaths of her parents and grandfather in a car accident. As Jessa runs away with her dog, Cassie, her disappearance creates turmoil not only for the town but for the sheriff, the community’s residents, and the Black families who find themselves under suspicion. This novel explores the racial tensions of the era, illustrating how white supremacy and distrust shaped the response to Jessa’s absence.
The story doesn't stop with just one book.
In Jessa’s Back, the stakes only rise as the shadows of the past continue to shape the future. These novels are a stark reflection of the dangers of racial prejudice in the 1950s South, with powerful connections to the world we live in today. Moffett, herself, was inspired by current events to confront the parallels with the white supremacy of the past and felt compelled to write these stories as a means of reflection and understanding.
Moffett describes these books as "wholly fiction," yet they are undeniably woven from her own experiences and her deep love of the South and its people. The characters and their stories are the foundation for a broader conversation—one that encourages us to examine how the echoes of the past continue to shape our present.

🌟 Today, I want to share a little journey that’s been close to my heart. A good friend, IreneLingefelter, encouraged me to participate in a contest hosted by the City of Phoenix for the New Community Center & Pool in Maryvale. She believed I could write a winning poem, and I’m so grateful for her faith in me!

I have to admit, I procrastinated for quite a while. Growing up in a family of talented writers, poets, and playwrights made me feel like a late bloomer, often hesitant to share my voice. But all those dreamy childhood moments finally came to fruition when I sat down to write my poem according to the city’s theme.

As the deadline approached, I found myself racing downtown Phoenix, dreading the parking situation. But wouldn’t you know it? God had a parking spot waiting for me right across from City Hall! I delivered my poem to a young man at the Art and Culture Department, secretly worried he wouldn’t submit it.

Then came the surprise: two weeks later, I received a contract from the City of Phoenix along with a check! My poem was one of three that were accepted! It’s now a part of the Maryvale Community Building, and it took a while but you can now find it on the City of Phoenix website.

What a blessing to know that my words will forever be a part of this community. 🌈✨
