Flooding in Bentiu has once again emerged as a serious concern, with rising waters displacing thousands of residents and overwhelming basic services in the Unity State capital.
Local authorities and humanitarian agencies warn that the situation is worsening, as families are forced to abandon submerged homes and seek shelter on higher ground. Makeshift camps are overcrowded, raising fears of disease outbreaks due to poor sanitation and limited clean water.
“The floods in Bentiu are not just seasonal; they are a serious humanitarian crisis,” a state official said, calling on the national government and international partners to step up assistance.
Roads leading into Bentiu remain partially cut off, complicating the delivery of food and medicine. Aid workers caution that without urgent support, the humanitarian needs will far exceed current response capacity.
Residents, many of whom have endured repeated cycles of displacement, expressed frustration at the lack of long-term solutions. “Every year we suffer the same,” one displaced mother told reporters. “We need real help, not just promises.”
The Unity State Relief and Rehabilitation Commission has appealed for boats, emergency shelter, and medical supplies to prevent further deterioration of conditions.
