This Veterans Day, we take time to honor the men and women who have worn our nation’s uniform and defended our freedoms. For many veterans, the transition from military service to civilian life brings them back to the farm.

At Farm Bureau, we believe it’s important not only to celebrate our veterans but also to lift up those who continue to make a difference in agriculture and in their communities. That’s why we partnered with Farm Credit to create the Veteran Farmer Award of Excellence.

This year’s honoree is Retired Army Command Sergeant Major Matthew Rutter—South Carolina Farm Bureau Federation member, who served 22 years in the Army, including key intelligence roles across Europe and the Middle East.

Meet Goose, a 12-year-old Red Heeler. In 2021, Goose’s family made the difficult decision to remove both his eyes after he went blind from glaucoma. His family hoped for the best of course, but they were amazed at how his resilience carried him through his recovery. Though he can’t round up the cattle or fetch tools anymore, Goose is still a critical part of farm life, using instinct and memory to guide him as he greets visitors and walks the fields.
