Ethiopia’s sustained Red Sea campaign has been unfolding for nearly three years. What began publicly as an argument about economic necessity and maritime access has increasingly developed into rhetoric involving geography, history, national destiny, sovereignty, and Eritrean territory.

In this discussion, we examine the intent behind this campaign, how the rhetoric has evolved, and why Ethiopia’s existing commercial access to the sea makes it necessary to distinguish between legitimate port access and ambitions carrying much more serious geopolitical implications.

We also examine attempts to use certain Eritrean opposition voices to reinforce this narrative. Opposition to the Eritrean government is legitimate, but political opposition should never become an instrument for undermining Eritrea’s sovereignty or territorial integrity. Eritreans can disagree profoundly about their government while recognizing the consequences of legitimizing external territorial ambitions.

This is bigger than Assab. It concerns Eritrea’s sovereignty, Red Sea security, and the stability of an already fragile Horn of Africa.

Access can be negotiated. Sovereignty cannot.
