Momentary Locals Welcome to Momentary Locals. Our philosophy when we travel is not to be a tourist but to see the place through the local lens.

We hope to inspire and instill a sense of wonder of all this planet, its people and cultures, have to offer.

A hidden oasis in the mountains. A community garden we got to harvest. A campfire under the blood moon. And a secluded beach on the Sea of Cortez with the best snorkeling we ever did.

This stretch of Baja’s East Cape had us questioning why we ever have to leave.

We went searching for the goldilocks of beaches. We struck out more times than we would like to admit. And when we finally thought we found the one, we very kindly got asked to leave by CONANP rangers protecting a turtle nesting site. Back to searching.

And then we found it.

Three nights at a camp where whales were breaching in front of us all morning. In the evening we spotted the mobula rays jumping and flew the drone to get a closer look, revealing an entire school of hundreds of them just offshore. That night as we were falling asleep we could hear them splashing around in the dark, and this time we knew exactly what it was.

Then we found a second beach. No snorkeling, but the swimming was perfect, the sunsets were ridiculous, and our $5 inflatable donut inner tube earned its keep. On our way out we stopped to explore the nearby lighthouse.

Is this our favorite spot in all of Baja?

We pulled into Camp Cerritos to spend some time with our friends Jeff and Becky. Four days later we left with a whole crew of new friends and a standing pickleball rivalry.

What started as a casual visit turned into game nights, morning coffee runs to the dog rescue cafe down the road, dinner in town where we tried our first pambazo and tripe tacos, and somehow an invitation to a stranger’s birthday party with a piñata and everything 🪅 . We said yes, obviously.

We came for a night and stayed four. The community at Camp Cerritos pulls you in and the vibes make it very hard to leave.

A week in Todos Santos and we started searching for property in the area.

We were lucky enough to house sit for the cutest dog, Sasha, in a home with a pool overlooking the desert and the sea. We had our friend’s Jeep, a town full of good food, and zero plans. This is exactly the kind of slow travel we dreamed about when we quit our jobs.

We ate our way through town, walked Sasha into every sunset, caught up with friends, visited the famous Hotel California, and soaked in every quiet morning before heading east toward the next adventure.

Todos Santos, you were everything we needed.

We rolled into La Paz and immediately felt the magic of this city. Two nights of reconnecting with friends, walking the malecón, eating our way through town, and just soaking it all in. La Paz has a way of slowing you down in the best possible way.

Then we left the pavement behind and went looking for a beach. The first spot we found had been closed off to protect local wildlife, which we completely respect. So we kept going. And what we stumbled onto instead stopped us in our tracks.

Four nights. Turquoise water. Snorkeling right off the sand. Warm sun, good people, and nowhere we needed to be.

This is what slow travel in Baja actually looks like, and we never wanted to leave.

We pulled into Loreto with no plan. Just lunch, maybe a look around, and then we didn’t leave.

That’s the thing about this life. The best parts are never the ones you planned. We ended up staying the night, meeting strangers at camp who turned into instant friends, enjoying the food and streets of Loreto — and then spontaneously following them to a beach on the Sea of Cortez we probably wouldn’t have explored on our own.

Three nights, new friends, a free beach on the Sea of Cortez, kayaks, beach pickleball, campfire dinners, sunrise hikes, and watching YouTube videos outside while the moon rose over the water. That was Playa Juncalito for us. That’s Baja.

We’d heard the gray whales in Guerrero Negro were friendly. We did not fully understand what that meant until one surfaced right next to our boat, looked us in the eye, and just... stayed. For two hours they came to us, swam beneath us, let us touch them. It is genuinely one of the most profound experiences of our lives.

This video has it all, whale tours at sunrise, the best fish tacos in all of Baja, a spontaneous 4-hour detour north to camp with friends, and our favorite campground of the entire trip in the magical town of San Ignacio. That mission at golden hour? We didn’t want to leave.
