My twin sister disappeared in her sunflower sweater on our 16th birthday—40 years later, my granddaughter came home wearing it and said, "Our school cleaning lady gave it to me."
My twin sister, Laura, disappeared on what should have been one of the happiest nights of our lives.
It was our sixteenth birthday in 1986.
Mom filled the house with balloons, Dad grilled burgers, and relatives crowded around the table until there weren't enough chairs for everyone.
Mom had spent months knitting our presents:
Matching sweaters.
Mine had daisies across the front.
Laura's had a huge yellow sunflower with one brown petal Mom had knitted by mistake.
"Don't fix it," Laura laughed. "Now nobody can steal mine."
Around nine that evening, Laura kissed Mom, stole another spoonful of frosting from our cake, and headed toward the door.
"I'm going outside for some fresh air. Save me another slice."
Those were the last words I ever heard her say.
Laura never came back.
There was no note.
No missing suitcase.
And no trace of the sunflower sweater.
For years, I jumped every time the phone rang.
Mom kept searching until the day she died.
Dad was different.
Within months, he stopped participating in the searches, packed Laura's photographs into boxes, and refused to say another word about her.
Dad is ninety now and lives in a nursing home twenty minutes away.
His body has grown frail, but his mind is still sharp.
To this day, he refuses to talk about Laura.
I always thought it was because losing her had been the greatest heartbreak of his life.
Last Tuesday marked exactly forty years since Laura disappeared.
That afternoon, my eight-year-old granddaughter, Sophie, came home from school wearing an enormous knitted sweater.
"Grandma! Look what our cleaning lady gave me!"
The plate in my hands hit the floor.
A yellow sunflower covered Sophie's chest.
And among its petals was one brown one.
I grabbed the collar and turned it over.
There, stitched in faded red thread, were the initials Mom had sewn forty years earlier.
L. M.
My knees went weak.
"Sophie, who gave you this?"
"Our new cleaning lady, Grandma. I just told you."
My hands started shaking.
Then Sophie added,
"Oh! She told me to check inside if you recognized it."
"Inside where?"
She pointed toward a tiny seam beneath the sunflower.
I'd never noticed it before.
I carefully pulled the fabric apart and reached inside.
My fingers touched something hard.
When I pulled it out, I screamed.
"Grandma, what is it?"
I couldn't speak.
Because I'd seen that object only once before—
in Dad's hands the night Laura disappeared.

\"I just noticed that there are tons of tiny metal balls under my kitchen sink. Most are not perfect spheres but almost all of them are round. They do not dissolve, and some look like they’re rusty so I think they’re made of metal. Above this cabinet there is a kitchen sink with a disposal and dishwasher. They have appeared in the past year or so, since I thoroughly cleaned under the sink when moving in. What are these?\"
