The brain encodes based on repetition and emotional intensity, not on intention. That's well-supported across several lines of research:
Donald Hebb's foundational principle, since validated at the synaptic level, shows that repeated co-activation of neurons strengthens the connection between them (long-term potentiation). The brain has no mechanism to check whether you wanted that connection strengthened it just responds to repeated firing patterns.
Ebbinghaus's forgetting curve research (and decades of replication since) shows memory strength is a direct function of repetition and spaced retrieval, independent of whether the content is wanted or unwanted. This is why intrusive thoughts, earworms, and unwanted habits get stronger the more they're mentally rehearsed.
Studies on habit formation show behaviors become encoded in the striatum through repetition regardless of conscious evaluation of the behavior's value. this is why people automatically reach for their phone or repeat self-critical thoughts even when they consciously want to stop.

Jane Austen gave her own name to the most beautiful, gentle and admired character in the room. It reads almost like a quiet self-portrait.
Dostoevsky gave his name to a greedy, selfish, morally corrupt old man who is ultimately murdered by his own son.

For over 30 years, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been sounding the same alarm. Iran is weeks, months away from a nuclear bomb. It started in 1992 when Netanyahu addressed Israel's Knesset and claimed Iran would be autonomous in nuclear weapons production within three to five years. (Al Jazeera) The prediction pointed to the year 2000. No bomb came. The warnings reset and continued, 1995, 2002, 2009, 2012, and beyond.
In 2012, Netanyahu gave a widely-mocked address at the United Nations using a printed cartoon bomb to allege Iran would have weapons capability within roughly one year. (The Intercept) But even then, leaked intelligence cables revealed that Israeli intelligence had actually determined Iran was "not performing the activity necessary to produce weapons" (The Intercept) directly contradicting Netanyahu's public claims.
Despite shifting intelligence estimates and changing diplomatic conditions, Netanyahu's warnings remained unchanged over time (Milwaukee Independent) , outlasting multiple American administrations, the 2015 JCPOA nuclear deal, and Trump's withdrawal from it.
Critics argue that rather than responding to a real-time nuclear threat, Netanyahu's long-running campaign may serve broader political and military goals, maintaining regional military dominance, justifying pre-emptive strikes, and deflecting attention from Israel's own undeclared nuclear arsenal estimated at 80–90 warheads.
