Astronomers have captured a rare image of a black hole tearing apart a star far from the center of its host galaxy.
The event involved a so-called “orphan” black hole suddenly flaring to life as it ripped apart a nearby star in what astronomers call a tidal disruption event (TDE). The findings were published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
Unlike the supermassive black holes typically found at the centers of galaxies, orphan or wandering black holes drift through the outer regions of their galaxies. Because they are isolated and usually inactive, they are extremely difficult to detect.
When a star wandered too close, the black hole’s gravity pulled it apart. As the stellar material spiraled inward, it heated up and released an intense burst of light, allowing astronomers to spot an object that would otherwise have remained invisible.
The discovery offers a rare glimpse of a wandering black hole in action and provides new clues about how these elusive objects move through galaxies and interact with the stars around them.
