Happy Birthday, Pac—we miss you and forever honor you on this side.

Pictured is Tupac in Waikiki in Honolulu island. He was there for the 1994 Summer Jam where he performed.

Imagine seeing Pac perform with palm trees in the background 😍

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1956 at Atlantic City’s Chicken Bone Beach—a segregated strip of the beach.

Chicken bone beach affectionately got its name because of all the joyous Black families who arrived with their chicken-filled baskets.

And if you needed reassurance, MLK is proof that we gotta take time off to just exist and find joy on this journey to liberation.

Let’s get this straight: WE BEEN OUT HERE; traveling, uplifting each other; finding joy as resistance—before the world was watching.

Black people have been here before and until America is dismantled and rebuilt, we will be here again.

It’s been hard to smile these past few weeks since we first heard of the latest innocent Black lives lost at the hands of racist police. We’re pouring libations for our gone-too-soon ancestors and taking care of ourselves and our loved ones until we can travel—gallivanting this Black beauty around the world—once more.

For now, please enjoy these images of Black folks traveling through the 1950s and 60s Jim Crow south—an eerily similar time to right now. Black travelers had to use “The Green Book, an almanac of hotels, restaurants, gas stations, beaches, and other businesses that would be safe for us to utilize.

If you’re looking to donate your dollas to a Black-owned small business—we’d be grateful. Your money would be used to sponsor a trip for a Black traveler on our next group trip and towards future events we host.

A place of peace and refuge for Black American activists and artists like Maya Angelou, Ghana has long been a conduit for Pan-Africanism.

In the spring of 1971 when Ike and Tina Turner headlined Soul to Soul, they were using music as a bridge between the diaspora and the continent.

While soul music might’ve been born in the belly of America’s deep south it is rooted in the rhythm of Africa.

Today, music festivals like Afrochella and Afronation take place in Accra each December bringing together Black folks from the US, UK, Europe, and the continent altogether--proving the music is a forever uniting force.

🇬🇭MAKOLA MARKET 🇬🇭 QUICK TIPS [Save this post]

1. Get there early -- you'll beat the heat and the crowds (kinda).

2. Negotiate, Negotiate, Negotiate -- it's likely that you'll be charged a foreigner tax on everything but you can usually talk them down a bit.

3. Shea Butter & Fabrics -- if you're on the hunt for either, this is the place to buy them. The ladies here sell authentic shea butter from the Northern region of Ghana and you can find lovely fabrics for tailored outfits.

4. When you're tired of the hustle and bustle, pop over to one of our favorite places in town, @theshopaccra. It's a design-led, cozy space where you can shop some of Ghana's best artisan brands sans-the hustle of Makola Market.

Hey Fam! We've got a new look for 2020 👀

YMT Co is now Buoyant so allow us to reintroduce ourselves:

1. Buoyant is a travel community built with three things in mind:

Black travel, Black economics, and Black Joy.

2. We host events (check out our #morethanmiami series), group trips (just got back from cutting up in Ghana) and have added a private members' club to our repertoire.

3. On each of our trips, we support at least one black-owned business - restaurants, accommodations or local guides/creative.

4. We dig film photography. Sometimes our photos will be digital and other times they'll be shot on film.

Our Story

Buoyant was created with black travel, group economics and black joy in mind. We curate a directory of black-owned businesses for you to patronize during your travels. Planning your next trip? We host group trips and travel events, too.

In a perfect world, our business wouldn’t need to exist and you wouldn’t have to leave your neighborhood to buy from a black-owned grocery store, hairdresser, restaurant or even a nightclub.

That world doesn’t yet exist, so in the meantime, we’ve also created this platform to curate black travel guides where you can go to find us: our music, our food and our people being celebrated.

We exist to help you connect with other cool black people during your travels. Who knows? You might just find your next travel buddy, bae, or co-founder.

I recently used You Me Travel & Co to plan my first solo trip to Morocco and the experience was amazing. Briona walked me through each step of the planning process, gave me helpful feedback on her experiences in Morocco, including places to stay and things to do, and created an itinerary for me that was customized to my traveling needs. She also went above and beyond for me when I needed assistance in addressing a potential conflict with my schedule. I highly recommend using You Me Travel & Co – the trip planning process was seamless and made me feel confident as a solo female traveler.
