We deeply mourn the loss of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, Breonna Taylor, and countless others. Protesters, we stand with you. We all, especially those of us with privilege, have a responsibility to speak up, take part in social justice movements, have difficult conversations within our own communities, educate ourselves, and support our Black friends, families, colleagues, neighbors, and strangers.

As we look to use our skills as storytellers to help create a better tomorrow, there are actions we can all take right now. Below is a list of resources, both local and national, where you can donate and lend your support.

- @FreedomFightersDC is looking for donations to support protestors and volunteers. Please contact through Instagram or [email protected], and check their stories for the latest information.

Production in the time of COVID. It's a creative challenge for sure. This week our team filmed with @clairegallowaysoprano, one of five opera singers we'll be filming with over the next week making something fun. Here's a few tips from director @kl_carlson, cam op @liza_veterok, and producer @deanneuh on how to keep your productions safe.

1. Slim down your crew to only the roles you need, but don't trim down unnecessarily. Having the right amount of hands and clearly defined roles will minimize passing around gear and supplies.
2. Wipe down and sanitize all gear before and after the shoot, but be careful around lenses and ports not to get any cleaning product inside. If using a disinfectant spray, spray directly onto the towel and then wipe down.
3. Pre-production should include a test shoot, so you can plan how to be as efficient as possible on the ground and minimize shoot time.
4. Be prepared for some charades and practice your smize. Masks not only muffle your voice but also hide your facial expression, so put in extra effort to be as clear as possible when communicating with your subject.
5. Put a folded tissue under your mask to help stop your glasses from fogging.

And of course, risk assessment. What's the risk in capturing the story? Is this the safest way to film? Are you putting anyone at risk, immunocompromised or otherwise?

Stay healthy and stay safe! @ Baltimore, Maryland

We are wishing everyone a meaningful Passover. Below is our latest project for HIAS. The illustrations are from their beautiful Haggadah which you can download here: https://www.hias.org/passover). Passover is a reminder to us all to celebrate with gratitude our freedom, and to reflect on those still suffering under the oppression of bondage. Even during this exceptionally strange period, we can take the time to remember we too were once strangers in a strange land. Let us renew our call to fight for human rights and to recognize ourselves in the faces of the other.

On the 40th Anniversary of the Refugee Act of 1980

40 years ago today, the US signed bi-partisan legislation formally establishing our refugee resettlement and asylum systems. It is a law that embodies our nation's spirit of freedom. We're honored to have made this video for HIAS and to continue to work with such an amazing organization.

Forty years ago, in the highest expression of the American spirit, Congress passed the Refugee Act of 1980.

Two refugees -- one fleeing Venezuela's regime and the other needing protection because of her sexual orientation. Both their lives were saved because they had the opportunity to resettle in a new country.

On the three year anniversary of the Trump administration's travel ban, we're proud to continue working with HIAS, the oldest refugee resettlement and protection agency in the US.

On Transgender Day of Remembrance, we honor the memory of lives lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. On this day, here are a few things you should know:

• Activist Gwendolyn Smith created Transgender Day of Remembrance in 1999 in memory of her friend, Rita Hester, a black trans woman murdered the year before.
• Trans women of color are at greater risk of death by hate crimes and violence than nearly any other sub group in the United States.
• Trans people are becoming more visible in society. Think Laverne Cox in Orange is the New Black, author Thomas Page McBee, and Danica Roem - Virginia Delegate. At the same time, hate crimes and violence against the trans community is on the rise.

We are proud to stand alongside our transgender friends and the trans community as allies. Pictured here is Corporal Laila Ireland, Captain Jennifer Peace and First Lieutenant El Cook, three trans service members featured in our first feature length documentary TransMilitary, along with Director Gabriel Silverman, Producer/Writer Jamie Coughlin, and co-director Fiona Dawson.

Please visit the link below to donate to SPART*A, an organization supporting transgender service members, and watch TransMilitary streaming for FREE on Amazon Prime to learn more about the lives of transgender service members and their fight to serve openly in our military.

Congratulations to VICE News Tonight on the Emmy win for Outstanding Coverage of a Breaking News Story in a Newscast for "Moment Of Truth: Kavanaugh And Ford"! We're grateful to have been part of the team.

SXS's Director Gabriel Silverman and Director of Photography Kathryn Carlson were part of several teams throughout the country covering all sides of the Kavanaugh-Ford hearings in real time. Gabe was part of the team covering the female protesters blasting Ford's testimony with an iPhone and a megaphone, and Kathryn followed Inez Stepman and the conservative group of women who turned up in support of confirming Kavanaugh.

Congrats to all who worked on the show!

Guess who's back, back again. Liza's back, tell your friends!

Our fabulous winter intern, Liza Slutskaya, has joined our team full time as an Assistant Editor! *crowd cheers*

Here's three fun things to know about her:
1. She's a native Russian speaker.
2. For the past two summers, she's worked with the Southern Exposure Film Fellowship helping to create films focused on environmental education advocacy.
3. She's not the biggest fan of fun facts.

Welcome to the team, Liza!! We're happy to have ya.

Resisterhood (2020) | Documentary

DC editors! There's a great opportunity to work as the lead editor for feature doc Resisterhood, starting ASAP. Information below h/t Lauren Knapp:

"A feature doc focusing on feminism and activism in the wake of 2016 election is looking for a lead editor to start ASAP.

It is a character-driven documentary about the everyday American citizens who were inspired to become activists in the wake of the 2016 election. The film follows several women (and one man) who are civically engaged in a variety of ways. They are unified in their positive outlook and drive to make the United States a welcoming country for all people.

The edit should take about 3 months and the director has a budget for color and sound mix on top of the edit. Looking for Washington DC area editors, but I think the director would be open to a remote editor if it's the right fit. She's hoping to start ASAP.

Please email Cheryl Crim ([email protected]) with a resume and work samples if you are interested."

RESISTERHOOD chronicles the Resistance Movement that caught fire on January 21, 2017 and is currently reforging US politics. This documentary will be released ahead of the 2020 elections.

We're grateful for all the work we get to do throughout the world. Our DP @kl_carlson and producer @deanneuh have worked on upwards of 40 international shoots in the past year, the most recent in Sri Lanka.

Here's our top three tips for filming in Sri Lanka if you're headed that way soon!

1. Leave yourself plenty of time for preproduction! Getting all of the appropriate documents approved is time-intensive and takes about a month in total.
2. Approval order of documents is key. A journalist visa is required for any sort of filming in country, but you can only apply for it after your film permit is approved.
3. As a woman, modest clothing is a must. @kl_carlson recommends linen pants that go below the knee and shirts with sleeves.

If you've got questions, send em our way! We're always happy to help.

One of my favorite childhood books is "Walk Two Moons." Sharon Creech wisely wrote “A person isn't a bird. You can't cage a person.” and “Don't judge a man until you have walked two moons in his moccasins.” In the book, the fantastically named protagonist Salamanca Tree Hiddle goes on a quest to better understand herself by better understanding others, by walking two moons.

Beginning this month, TransMilitary is available to educational institutions through our fantastic partners at Alexander Street. Come walk two moons with us.

Did you know that 15,500 transgender people serve in the U.S. military? And that the U.S. military is the largest transgender employer in the U.S.?

The award-winning documentary TransMilitary from #AcademicVideoOnline chronicles the lives of four individuals defending their country’s freedom abroad while fighting for their own back home. They put their careers and families’ livelihoods on the line by coming out as transgender to top brass officials in the Pentagon in the hopes of attaining the equal right to serve.

Documentaries provide a lens into others’ realities and offer viewpoints that challenge our opinions and assumptions. They encourage students’ critical thinking and are a valuable addition to any curriculum.

It is important we remind people that seeking asylum is a legal right. The US has signed international treaties and has passed its own laws allowing those fleeing persecution and violence to claim safe harbor at our borders, even without prior permission or visas. While not all who cross our borders without permission seek asylum, we have a process in place to determine their status.

We're proud to have produced this video for HIAS explaining what asylum means and its critical history in the United States.

Please watch and share.

To learn more about how you can get involved please visit https://www.hias.org/how-take-action-asylum-seekers

Asylum is all over the news, along with borders closed, children forcibly separated from their parents, and people detained in cages.
We made a new video to help explain what asylum really means and why it's essential for people fleeing for their lives.

It's been a year since Trump issued the first travel ban, and the effects have been worse than you think. Thanks Scott Rogowsky for helping to explain the issue in our latest piece for HIAS. People from all over the world seeking safe haven and an opportunity to work have been the backbone of this country since its inception. It's been our arguably our nation's greatest strength. Let's not lose sight of that now.
It's #WorldRefugeeDay ! Watch our most recent collaboration with HIAS and The United Tastes of America in telling the story of a Jewish community in New Jersey finding common ground with Syrian refugees over food, conversation, and an evening of cultural exchange.
