Playing the Un-Naming Game in New York Is Harder Than It Seems

Identifying New York streets, bridges, and squares that should be un-named is easy, but weighing and balancing the good done by George Washington, James Madison, and John F. Kennedy against their public and private shortcomings is the hard work of thinking critically about history, Edward C. Halperin writes.

Un-naming public places can begin as a classroom game along with a serious debate informed by historical facts and expert advice.

News That Matters

The Globe Post is the flagship news outlet of The Globe Post Media, a U.S. digital media organization, delivering quality news, analysis and commentary. It was launched in 2016.

The Globe Post is publishing breaking news, feature articles, analysis, commentary, interviews, book reviews, infographics, and videos. Our cornerstone content includes all-in-one pieces about one particular subject — data-driven, well-told, informative articles rich with videos, and graphics.

We are working with over 50 journalists around the world, with a particular emphasis on rights violations, civil liberties, press freedom, minority rights and democratization.

The press has been under tremendous pressure lately, both by despots and due to unsustainable business models. Without it, powerful individuals are easily able to get away with their actions. We intend to satisfy people’s need to learn, be informed and hold governments, individuals and corrupt companies accountable.

We believe that reporting rights violations, without discrimination or favor, add to the fear of those who commit them. We believe that every respected news media, in ways small and big, is helping eliminate the latest scourge of autocracy that sweeps across the world. We see ourselves at the front of this cause.

We also believe that readers should not jump from one article into another while searching for certain information and they should be able to find most information about a certain subject within a single piece. Every month, we publish a number of comprehensive articles, filed by people right on the ground, about world’s trending topics.

Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Nay, but they have no firm Belief. Or are with them the treasures of your Lord? Or are they the tyrants with the authority to do as they like? Or have they a stairway (to heaven), by means of which they listen (to the talks of the angels)? Then let their listener produce some manifest proof.
Do their minds command them this [i.e. to tell a lie against you (Muhammad SAW)] or are they people exceeding the bounds (i.e. from Belief in Allah to disbelief). Or do they say: "He (Muhammad SAW) has forged it (this Quran)?" Nay! They believe not! Let them then produce a recital like unto it (the Quran) if they are truthful. Were they created by nothing, or were they themselves the creators?
Not happy today. On an article by "The Globe Post" published by Efrain Vasquez-Vega & Juan Lopez-Bauza. The following is a direct quote from the report, "What kind of statehood can be given to a territory half of whose population neither wants it nor feels American, while the other half favors it just as a guarantee of perpetual welfare assistance?" Who are you to say that Puerto Ricans see the affiliation with the U.S. as a means of perpetuating welfare assistance? I suggest you do some research and educate yourselves on Puerto Rico's political history and situation. Allow me to instruct you a little. The economical situation that Puerto Rico is experiencing today while in part attributed to poor management by all the politicians who have been in office there, for the most part is the result of the Jones Act. The U.S. government enforces its abuse by over charging Puerto Rico for the import of necessary goods in to the island and enrich its corrupt politicians and transport companies pockets. The money they claim P.R. owe has been paid in folds with the over charge already paid. So the way we see it, P.R. does not owe anything to anyone. The so called assistance provided to the island does not come without a price. Or what do you think that the U.S. government is that generous. They don't provide anything without gaining something. Puerto Ricans are hard working people. They don't give up no matter what adversities come their way. We are proud survivors despite all the challenges we have encountered and will continue to fight against all odds for our survival and the respect that we so deserve. So wash your mouth clean before you talk about Puerto Ricans. And you could take that to the bank.
