Coronavirus is Devastating the Homeless Community: DC Must Pivot Quickly to Save Lives

Cross-Posted from the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless For decades, the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless has worked to break down the barriers that widespread poverty has created. Since our inception, we have worked to affirm housing as a fundamental right—not a privilege. Perhaps no moment more critically highlights the crucial importance of and need for housing and safe spaces than the current public health emergency. [ 664 more words ]

Black Lives Matter DC

As the COVID-19 and economic crisis continues to develop, it is critical that we take action on housing to protect our people with policies that reflect the beliefs and needs of communities who are most directly impacted. This town hall will center the voices of residents who are living in under-resourced neighborhoods, native Washingtonians, Black, Brown, immigrants, indigenous, and people of color.

Join Aja Taylor of Bread for the City; Veronica Mosqueda of LEDC; Sela Lewis, a DC Tenants Union Board Member for Uptown Chapter; Anthony Lorenzo Green; and Janeese Lewis George for a virtual event about housing rights now and for the long-term.

We’ll share information about housing protections that tenants can use right now, as well as how DC leaders could be doing more to take action for more just housing permanently. This event is an educational townhall. Attending this event does not reflect any organizational or individual endorsement of either candidate.

You can join this event one of the following ways:

Sign on to Demand All States include Undocumented Workers in Coronavirus Response

The federal stimulus package has fully excluded undocumented workers and their families. This no doubt reflects Donald Trump’s racism, stupidity, and incompetence, but it is also symptomatic of an ongoing failure of the federal government. For over two decades, Congress has deprived equal rights t...

The People's COVID-19 Demands

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people are looking for ways to help their communities or communities with less resources than their own come through the current crisis as undamaged as possible. As a result, community activists and organizers created the DC Mutual Aid Network. Although they take donations from anyone, Mutual Aid Network administrators and lead organizers are clear that they are not a charity. [ 143 more words ]

Today is the 32nd birthday of #AlbertRamonDorsey and the one year anniversary of our #Boycott24 campaign. We’ve been calling for a boycott of 24-Hour Fitness because they regularly call the police on their Black members, bringing the deaths of #DennisToddRogers in 2017 and Ramon in 2018.

So others do NOT have to experience this heart-drenching DAILY NIGHTMARE...I STAND! 🙏🏾Marqueese Alston-My Youngest Born Son you being killed by the Washington Metropolitan Police Dept. will NOT BE IN VAIN I AFFIRM!✊🏾 "For example, the Washington Metropolitan Police Dept. denied families public access to the body-camera footage in every high-profile police killing in 2018. The families of D’Quan Young, Jeffrey Price and Marqueese Alston have been waiting over 16 months for the body-camera footage related to their killings. But instead of being allowed to access this video — which would not only shed light on what happened to their loved ones but might also be used as the basis for a formal complaint, a lawsuit or public advocacy..."

21 DAYS EVERYBODY! We have 21 days to take back our country, empower our friends, family, neighbors, and community, and make history in this 2018 Election. Standing by and posting your frustrations to social media just won't cut it at this point. We are all angry and hurt and confused, now let's go do something about it! Sign up now to get out the vote this November! (link attached) https://goo.gl/forms/lKhIRKkNbglujpuL2
We are now 29 Days away from Election Day and as you all know, the world has become a scarier place these past couple of weeks. Now is the time to get angry. Now is the time to take action. Online activism needs to be taken to the streets. It's never too late to make a difference. Things are really starting to heat up as we move closer to the election and we absolutely need all hands on deck for our Get Out The Vote movement the last two weekends of October as well as the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th of November. We are asking all of you to commit to at least one day to canvass. To knock one packet usually takes around two hours. That's two hours out of the 168 hours in a week. Canvassing has proven to be the most effective way of sky rocketing voter turnout and you all can be a part of that. There are a lot of things in this world that we can't control, but this election is something we can through becoming activists and volunteers and teachers to our neighbors and community. Attached below is our sign up form with dates and times we have available. SIGN UP TODAY! https://goo.gl/forms/DcXZWJiBcdy4FUim1
