Today is World Bicycle Day and a project in Waterbury happening today aims to make one area of town safer for cyclists.
What began as a study a year ago to explore improving vehicle, bike and pedestrian safety and connections in Waterbury Center takes a giant step forward this week.
Work is happening today to add a number of safety features in the vicinity of Waterbury Center’s “triangle park” and Hope Davey Park where Guptil Road, Maple Street and Howard Avenue converge.
Crews will be on site from 7 a.m. through the day today with road sections closed in the areas where they are working. Motorists are advised to be alert for the activity and to find alternate routes around the area to avoid delays.
The project is part of the Better Connections study that began last year.

The Waterbury Select Board began early tonight at 5:30 with an executive session update about the town manager search from their consultant assisting with the recruitment process. At 6:30, they will convene the public part of the meeting. Among other topics is a review of the draft agreement with DEW Construction regarding potentially developing the Stanley Wasson site downtown for housing. The agreement would give DEW a year to evaluate and draft a construction proposal. It's included in the attachments for tonight's meeting at the link here. Meeting is in the Steele Room and steamed over Zoom (link on the agenda):

A cautionary tale with some good advice as usual from Stowe Mountain Rescue.

A cautionary tale with some good advice as usual from Stowe Mountain Rescue.

This weekend we knocked the dust off our litter with our first carry of 2026. A very nice woman was visiting Stowe for her friend’s milestone birthday. They were enjoying a hike on the Pinnacle when a downhill slip caused an injury that brought them to a standstill. When we arrived on scene, we released Birthday Girl to go continue her celebrations, promising to take good care of our subject. We splinted her injury and loaded her into the litter for the hour-long extraction. It was downhill all the way on a mellow path, so a good intro to the season from our perspective. Plus, she was the model subject – friendly, calm, grateful and with a high pain threshold.

Slips and falls happen, and you can never fully eliminate the risk. Take your time, be sure to wear solid footwear and consider hiking with poles for support. Be equipped so that if something does happen, you can stay warm and hydrated while you wait for help. The slip itself might not be preventable, but hypothermia is.

If you ever need us, call 911 - hiking season is here and we’re ready to respond.

The Washington-Chittenden House district has a new Democratic candidate for the August primary. Katarina Lisaius has stepped up to run for office, joining state Rep. Theresa Wood, D-Waterbury, who is running for re-election.

We face real, complex hurdles ahead, but I know what Vermonters can achieve when we look out for one another.  I am running because I believe that by working together, we can build a resilient, supportive future where every neighbor thrives.
