A defect measuring just 10 microns caused an aircraft communication system to fail. Thats smaller then the width of human hair!

Click the link below to check out the latest episode of Manufacturing Runs the World, where I sat down with Tessa Axsom from Fictiv to discuss metallurgy, aerospace manufacturing, failure analysis, and a remarkable investigation that traced a critical system failure to a defect smaller than the width of a human hair.

It's a reminder that in manufacturing, the smallest details often have the biggest consequences.

Manufacturing does run the world.

But too often, the people doing the work are invisible.

Every machine.
Every product.
Every production line.
Every innovation.

Behind all of it are real people solving real problems every single day.

That’s what we’re building with Manufacturing Runs The World:
A community for the people, companies, technologies, and stories driving modern manufacturing forward.

This industry deserves:
✔️ more visibility
✔️ more respect
✔️ stronger connections
✔️ a bigger voice

If you work in manufacturing, engineering, machining, robotics, automation, fabrication, or industrial technology…

One of the coolest parts of manufacturing?

Sometimes engineers get handed problems nobody has ever solved before.

No blueprint.
No previous design.
No proven process.

Just:
“Can you build this?”
In this clip from Manufacturing Runs The World, Anthony Reiter, Chief Finance Officer of Reiter Technical Services talks about the reality of custom manufacturing projects — where companies are asked to design one-off machines that may never be built again.

That’s the side of manufacturing most people never see:
⚙️ invention
⚙️ experimentation
⚙️ engineering under pressure
⚙️ solving impossible problems

Modern manufacturing is far more creative than people realize.

🇺🇸 What Built It?

An AR-15.

How many manufacturing companies do you think it takes to make one?

Not assemble one.

Actually build one.

Drop your guess in the comments. 👇

And if you already know the answer… you should probably follow us.

People think manufacturing is already fully automated.

The reality is…

Many companies are still running critical operations through manual processes.

In this clip from Manufacturing Runs The World, manufacturing engineer Kyle Fenstermacher of Universal Laser Systems explains how production numbers were being tracked by:

⚙️ writing output on whiteboards
⚙️ manually collecting the numbers
⚙️ handing papers to someone else
⚙️ manually entering everything into Excel

Every.
Single.
Day.

So they built a digital dashboard system that transformed the process.

This is what modern manufacturing actually looks like:
continuous improvement, automation, problem-solving, and operational efficiency.

Most people think manufacturing is dangerous.

The reality?

Modern manufacturing facilities are heavily focused on safety, procedures, training, and protection systems.

In this clip from Manufacturing Runs The World, Anthony Reiter, Chief Finance Officer of Reiter Technical Services explains that most serious incidents happen when people ignore safety procedures — not because the industry itself is unsafe.

Today’s manufacturing environments are filled with:
⚙️ machine guards
⚙️ lockout/tagout procedures
⚙️ OSHA safety systems
⚙️ engineered protection measures

Because protecting workers matters.

Manufacturing isn’t the reckless industry people imagine.

It’s one of the most process-driven industries in the world.

Today, we pause to honor the brave men and women whose service and sacrifice helped make our freedoms possible.

We hope you enjoy a wonderful Memorial Day surrounded by family, friends, and the people who matter most, while taking a moment to reflect on those who made it all possible.

✈️ What Built That?

This jet turbine engine might be one of the most complex products humans have ever created.

But here’s the question:

How many manufacturing companies do you think it took to build it?

10?

100?

1,000?

More?

Drop your guess in the comments before reading anyone else’s answer.
