Apparently there’s a big debate on social media about someone bringing an iced coffee into a job interview. ☕️
Maybe I’m old school, but here’s what I’ve always taught my kids:
You don’t walk into an interview carrying your Starbucks, breakfast, energy drink, or anything else you don’t need. You bring your professional self, a copy of your résumé, and your confidence.
Is an iced coffee proof that someone would be a bad employee? Of course not. But an interview isn’t just about whether you can do the job. It’s also about showing that you understand professional settings and know how to make a good first impression.
You may only get 20 or 30 minutes for someone to form an opinion of you. Why introduce something completely unnecessary that could distract from the impression you want to make?
Arrive a few minutes early. Put your phone away. Finish your drink before you go inside. Be polite to EVERYONE you encounter. Make eye contact. Be prepared. Bring your résumé. Ask good questions. And let you be what they remember.
You can disagree with whether something as small as an iced coffee should matter — but when you’re trying to get hired, the goal isn’t to test what you can get away with. The goal is to put your best foot forward.
Save the iced coffee for the celebration after you get the job. 😉☕️
