One of my favorite types of adventure is trying to get lost by exploring new places on old roads. On one of these adventures, I went through this gateway, and it stuck with me how cool it was and what a time it was when it was built.

ON THIS DAY 89 years ago – The Gateway to Monongahela National Forest, a prominent roadside landmark near Elkins, was dedicated 89 years ago on October 5, 1934. The stone portal was handcrafted by the Civilian Conservation Corps and was originally planned as a standard entry design for the Forest, however, no other stone gateways like this one were ever built.
