When was the last time a health professional truly looked at all of you — not just one part or address only one complaint?

Most of us can relate: We go to our primary care provider… and if something isn’t “normal,” we’re referred:
➡️ Cardiology for the heart
➡️ Neurology for headaches
➡️ GI for gut issues
➡️ Ortho for joint pain

Sometimes the specialists collaborate. Sometimes they’re simply too busy to connect the dots. But the truth is — everything is connected.

Your 8 pillars of health — physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, nutritional, financial, occupational, and environmental — work together like a system.
>A stressful job can affect your sleep.
>Poor sleep can trigger headaches.
>Headaches can impact your mood/emotions.
>Your mood can affect your relationships… and so on.

Just this week I have been asked what I do — and I shared:

I’m a board certified nurse coach. I use my nursing knowledge to help clients balance their health “wheel” and gave this example:
I was that client who had seen 23+ providers for migraines. Together, with my nurse coach we took a step back. We looked at everything — food, sleep, air quality, fragrances, stress, purpose. We problem-solved across the pillars until symptoms improved or were eliminated. That inspired me to help others in similar health and wellness situations to me.

🩺 15 years ago today, I graduated nursing school.

I started my career as an Occupational Health and Safety Nurse in a potato manufacturing facility in the PNW — educating, advocating, and caring for over 500 workers & contractors while building and maintaining safety and wellness programs.

Since then, nursing has changed — for both nurses and patients:
1️⃣ Technology — We’ve moved from paper charts to EMRs, telehealth, and AI tools that assist (but sometimes complicate) care.
2️⃣ Patient needs — Chronic conditions are more common. Cases are more complex. And insurance limitations often leave little time for true patient education or prevention.
3️⃣ Workplace pressures — Staffing shortages, higher patient acuity, and moral injury are all too familiar in today’s healthcare environments.
4️⃣ Access to care — Medical advances have been incredible, but the system is harder to navigate — with real barriers that leave many patients falling through the cracks.
5️⃣ The nurse’s role — We’ve evolved beyond the bedside. Today’s nurse is also a teacher, advocate, coach, and change-maker.

This is why nurse coaching matters. It reflects what Florence Nightingale envisioned:
Nursing as both a science and an art — focused on helping people heal, grow, and thrive.

Glitter is fun for 5 minutes…and then it's the devil, she told me.

I snapped this picture years ago — spray adhesive, glitter, a doll, markers… all scattered across the carpet in my daughter’s room. Out of the frame there was scribbling on her carpet with sharpie.

It made me smile (and sigh) when I found it recently.
Life at that stage? CHAOTIC. At lunch we had a daily check-in called "Addy's Antics" and I'd share what she had been up to in the previous 24 hours. My colleagues would get a hearty chuckle, & I'd often receive parenting wisdom from them since I was the youngest teacher on staff.

And honestly, so much of it still feels that way sometimes.
That glitter? It reminds me of the quick fixes we grab onto when we’re overwhelmed:
➡️ The crash diet, pill, or injection that promises fast results
➡️ The planner that’s going to “finally” organize your time
➡️ The habit you try to start (again) when stress hits
➡️ Skimming a Bible verse instead of sitting with it & meditating on it

It feels good for a moment — but we’re left cleaning up the mess when it doesn’t stick.

This weekend, our pastor reminded us to stay engaged — with the Word, with what truly nourishes us. He shared that in a study from Center for Bible Engagement that: 9/10 people own a Bible. 98% of people believe the Bible is relevant to their life. 96% of people say it is their life authority. But, only 50% of people read it daily.

The primary reason people didn't engage daily with their Bible: too busy. Too busy! (If you would like to listen to this sermon let me know and I'll share the YouTube link!)

As with our faith, it is the same with our health, our work, and our wellness. When we slow down and stay engaged DAILY with what matters — whether that’s our body, our mind, or our spirit — that’s when we see lasting change.

For years, I had made a point to keep a plant in my classroom office and fresh flowers in my brick and mortar wellness center—sometimes it was a flowering plant once a season, other times it was a weekly ritual! This was all before I learned the health benefits behind plants and flowers!

Now that I'm working virtually, I've made it a point to pick them up for my home. I’ve shopped from my local florist when I wanted something special, and more often than not I've grabbed a cheerful bunch from Albertsons or Costco while grocery shopping. No matter where they come from, these simple additions often create a pick-me-up in my daily life.

DID YOU KNOW: Bringing fresh flowers or live plants into your space is not about an occasional treat—it’s about weaving small, intentional choices into your lifestyle that nurture your well-being. And the ripple effect? It touches all 8 pillars of wellness:

✨ Emotional – Flowers brighten your mood and ease stress naturally.
✨ Mental – Plants and blooms encourage mindfulness; they gently ground you in the present moment.
✨ Physical – Cleaner air, a calmer nervous system, and a subtle nudge to slow down.
✨ Spiritual – A reminder of God’s beautiful creation and the joy found in simple things.
✨ Environmental – Greener, fresher spaces support a sense of peace and balance.

💡 A few easy tips to make fresh flowers feel doable:

Watch for clearance flowers and plants—many stores offer bouquets for $5 or less and may have a clearance section for plants.

Choose a single stem or small bundle. A single daisy or rose in a jar is plenty to lift a space.

Swap cuttings or clippings with friends or neighbors.

Nurses — we’ve been the original health coaches long before it became a trendy title. We’re natural teachers, healers, and advocates — and that’s exactly how I serve my clients today.

I’ve been in healthcare for 15 years this week — as a Registered Nurse (BSN) and Licensed Massage Therapist, and a Teacher/Adjunct Faculty in public education and community college levels for 5 years.

The people I have worked with through the years have accomplished so much while balancing what feels like the weight of the world:
> Graduating high school and beyond
> Raising children and grandchildren
> Juggling careers or pursuing higher education
> Supporting aging parents — sometimes right in their own homes
> Showing up every day for patients, employees, or colleagues
> Volunteering in their communities
> Being that steady person everyone counts on

Over here, I’m deep in the trenches of single-wife life. One kiddo is graduating in May (and heading to Costa Rica for an internship just 4 days later—he’s asking ALL.THE.QUESTIONS!). My youngest is juggling school and sports, while my husband is long-hauling, leaving the homefront all mine to manage.
