Saying Goodbye to a Friend Far Too Soon

Daphne Taylor, as I learn of your passing way too soon, my heart is heavy. In my line of work, I’ve encountered many journalists—each with their own unique gifts—but Daphne Taylor was truly one of a kind. Her passion for journalism shone through every assignment, every interview, every story she told.

She had a remarkable way of connecting with people. Whether working with celebrities or engaging with her community, Daphne always brought warmth and dedication. I’ll never forget her close bond with Gary Detman, those Sunday morning calls with an “exclusive” tip. Whenever I asked what the exclusive story was about, Gary would reply with a kiss on my forehead and a grin: “Babe, what part of the word exclusive don’t you understand?” It was classic Daphne—always sharing a story, always leaving her mark.

Now, I can only imagine Daphne and Gary together again, discussing exclusives, sharing laughs, and relishing their passion for storytelling, just as they used to. Daphne, give my Babe a big hug for me. Rest in Peace, my friend.

Motivational speaker Chris Speak Chris B. Williams knocked it out of the park today as the keynote speaker Indian River State College's commencement ceremonies. Chris delivered a powerful and uplifting keynote address to the 2025 graduating class. Speaking at two of the ceremonies today, Chris captivated students and their families with a motivational message centered on the keys to success: reaching higher, never stopping the pursuit of learning, and always showing gratitude. Under the leadership of Dr. Timothy E. Moore, Indian River State College continues to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to student achievement and lifelong impact. A personal highlight of the day was reconnecting with my longtime friend, Kathleen F. Walter, now at IRSC. It was an incredible day all around. Congratulations to the Class of 2025 — and Chris, you rocked it!

A huge shoutout to the incredible Dr. Flora Bentsi-Enchill of Flora Dental. Toady, she did something truly extraordinary for our family. For those of you who know me, you are aware that my son Raffie lives with Autism. Raffie has never been able to undergo a dental procedure without full sedation, not even a simple cleaning. For dental appointments, we previously had to take the whole entourage—his older brothers— to ensure Raffie didn't endanger himself or the dentist when they tried to sedate him. For his last surgical procedure, an anesthesiologist was present for the entire procedure. But today, thanks to Dr. Flora's patience, kindness, and caring demeanor, Raffie had a surgical tooth extraction with no sedation at all. Dr. Flora made him feel safe, respected, and like a true team member throughout the entire process. If you have an adult child with ASD or other neurodiverse conditions and you're still searching for the right dentist, I cannot recommend Dr. Flora enough. She is compassionate, skilled, and knows how to meet the needs of those requiring a little extra attention. We are so grateful. Thank you, Dr. Flora. Babe, two years ago today, you put on your heavenly wings and flew out of here. You left behind tons of broken hearts. But you also left a lifetime of memories and a reminder of how lucky I was to be the woman in your life. I can get through most days without crying. Every day, I can smile about something you said or did. Continue to rest, my love. Oh, wait, I'm still waiting on those lottery numbers. Send those first, and then continue resting until we meet again. We love you and you will always be in our hearts.

Our sweet boy, you are the light of our lives. You amaze us every single day.
When you were first diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, we didn’t know what that would mean for our family. There was fear, uncertainty—but most of all, love. And as we walked this journey together, we realized something beautiful: you weren’t the one who needed to change—we were.
Everything became brighter when we stopped trying to fit you into the world’s expectations and instead embraced the world through your eyes. Every milestone, every challenge, every moment with you has made our hearts fuller and our love deeper. You have taught us patience, joy, and a kind of unconditional love we never knew existed.
Raffie, you are extraordinary. You are exactly who you were meant to be, and we are so blessed to be on this journey with you.
We love you beyond words. Happy Birthday, Raffie.
