In celebration of Black History Month, Madison Gibbs from the Thomas Day State Historic Site stopped by Rockingham Community College on Tuesday to give a presentation about the life and works of Thomas Day, a free black cabinet maker from the early 19th Century. The Museum & Archives of Rockingham County also brought two of his chairs for the public to see.

Born free in Virginia in 1801, Day spent the majority of his life in Caswell County, NC, designing furniture and architectural elements for figures such as Governor David Settle Reid, who was a Reidsville native. At the height of his career, Day operated the largest cabinetmaking shop in NC, employing 50 skilled black and white woodworkers.

If you would like to see some of his works in person, you can go to the Thomas Day State Historic Site in Milton, the Museum & Archives of Rockingham County in Wentworth, and the Governor David S. Reid House in Reidsville.
