A Hazy Yellow Feeling

A Hazy Yellow Feeling I had an uncle named Tom. An aunt named Robbie. Four cousins I never got to know. In 1972 a bomb tore their plane out of the sky over Vietnam. Our town grieved.

And then quietly moved on.

A listener stopped in to say hi yesterday. He grew up in West Bend, moved away years ago, and was back in town for a visit. He brought yearbooks with pictures of the Kenny girls he went to school with. It was the first time we’d ever met, but it felt like I’ve known him for years.

Oh, and his name is James Andrew. Same as mine. We figured that out somewhere in our email exchanges.

Pretty cool.

Episode 3 is up now. Episode 4 is almost done. Link to listen in the comments.

A few people have told me Episode 3 is too short. One of them told me just today. She was smiling when she said it. Everyone has actually.

It's eleven minutes and three seconds because that's where that part of the story ended.

I could've added more. Stretched it out and gotten all theatrical. I promised myself I wouldn't do that with this podcast. Believe me it would be easy to do given the twisted series of events that surround this story. But I didn't need to. This story doesn't need my help being dramatic.

Episode 4 is coming.

Keith's Resort. Home of the best burger known to humankind. Thank you to Kaela Mutter for this picture. Amazing.

My wife said it looked just like she imagined it. 😎

I'm posting this because it's haunting. Heavy as can be knowing what happened on that plane before this footage was shot. Cathay Pacific 700Z. This is actual footage of the aftermath. My Lord.

Three people told me they were a little pi**ed I ended Episode 3 where I did. I couldn't help it. I'm telling this story one episode at a time, for however long it takes.

Episode 4 is in progress. Link to previous episodes in comments.

Standing in a restaurant the other night, two people started telling me stories about John and Mary Kenny. They were laughing — actually laughing — because the happy memories overshadowed the sad ones.

That's been one of the most enriching things since I started this. People reaching out. Emails. People remembering.

"Danny was a wise guy." "John was a rebel." "Mary had a way of flipping her hair." ☺️

Episode 2 is about who the Kenny family was before. The seven of them, alive. If you knew them, or your parents did, send me your stories. The small stuff especially. It's good to remember I think.

Episode 2 is up. Episode 3 comes out this weekend.

Her room was on the second floor of the house on Evergreen. Yearbook from Badger Middle School on the dresser. Clothes she’d worn that week in the closet.

That’s how the room looked the day she left it.

It was springtime in West Bend. A 13-year-old girl, walking out the door of her room, heading downstairs to wherever she and her family were going.

Episode 2. The Kenny Crash.

(I imagine her room looked something like this.)

A big toothy grin. Caught in that awkward stretch between girl and woman.

But her haircut. Her face. There was something about her that made me think of Astrid Kirchherr — the Hamburg art student who photographed the Beatles before anyone knew who they were.

This is Khaki. She’s in Episode 2: The Long Goodbye, The Kenny Family, before.

THANK YOU.

Not just for listening — though that means everything. But to those who emailed, called, and commented with your memories of the Kenny family.
You helped me see them.

You’ll hear your words, in one form or another, in Episode 2. It’s out now.

And if you’ve had trouble finding the show — here’s the easiest way:
