Martha watched Jamie sleep, clutching her dog like a pillow. “He’s like my own,” she said softly. I smiled, exhausted from work. “You’re our guardian angel.”
But Jason? “Does he know how hard this is?” she asked.
“He knows,” I lied.
Truth? He was busy—with someone else.
That night, I picked up a couple in my rideshare job. The man in the gray coat? Jason. With his mistress, Ashley. They kissed, whispered, planned a future built on lies. He promised her everything—as soon as I got my inheritance. My sick mother’s apartment.
He didn’t even recognize me behind the wheel.
I said nothing. Just listened. On Tuesday, I made dinner and asked Jason if he remembered our anniversary. He fumbled, made excuses. “Business trip,” he said.
He was lying. Again.
Saturday came. I dressed up, just like on our first date. Took Jamie with me.
“To a party,” I told him. “Be polite.”
We showed up at Ashley’s house. Her smile dropped when she saw me.
“I’m here to meet my husband’s fiancée,” I said sweetly.
Chaos followed. Jason turned pale. Jamie called him “Daddy.” I exposed everything—his lies, his plans, his betrayal. Ashley’s parents were stunned. A glass shattered behind me as I walked away with Jamie.
I didn’t look back.
Three months later, Ashley’s parents testified at the divorce hearing. Jason lost everything. Jamie, Mom, and I moved to the coast. Small house. Big peace.
Jason? Just a chapter I finished.
And me?
I found myself again—sharp, clear, and finally free.
