The American Women Quarters Program is a four year celebration of powerhouse women who’ve made history in the U.S. Several of these trailblazing figures have also been commemorated as Barbie dolls starting with Maya Angelou, whose quarter was released in 2022. Maya Angelou was the first Black woman ever featured on U.S. currency.

Then came aviation pioneer Bessie Coleman in 2023, followed by music legend Celia Cruz in 2024. Coming later this year: Ida B. Wells, the fearless journalist and civil rights icon, and tennis trailblazer Althea Gibson.

While Althea doesn’t have a Barbie (yet!), her impact is undeniable, so much so that honored her with a tribute outfit at the 2025 U.S. Open.

Fun fact: The iconic voiced Princess Kida in Disney’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001). That same year, Mattel released a Princess Kida doll—making her the official “unofficial” first Black Disney Princess! In 2021 Disney released the Limited Edition Kida doll celebrating the movies 20th Anniversary. Cree also brought Penelope to life in Barbie as Rapunzel. I grew up hearing her voice in the Rugrats, Codename: Kids Next Door, As Told by Ginger, Looney Tunes, and of course, watching her as Freddie Brooks in A Different World.
