40 TO 60 RESIDENTS WITH TIES TO CENTRAL LOUISIANA STRANDED IN JAMAICA AFTER HURRICANE MELISSA
We’ve learned that between 40 and 60 people from Central Louisiana, many with direct ties to Alexandria, are currently stranded in Jamaica following the devastation left by Hurricane Melissa.
Communication remains spotty, but reports confirm they are without running water, electricity, or sufficient food and roads are blocked. There is also significant structural damage to the main property where a large group was staying. Others staying in nearby properties are facing similar conditions.
One person described the horror of enduring more than eight hours of wind and rain coming from every direction, windows shattering, glass and debris flying, while feeling completely helpless. They spoke of the stress and uncertainty of not knowing the next steps to reach safety, especially with limited communication and damaged infrastructure.
A mother of one of the stranded travelers said, “While everyone is physically safe, the emotional toll of the experience has been significant.”
It is not yet known when commercial flights will resume into Montego Bay, though some relief flights have begun arriving.
