Mtn. Grove resident Cassie Todd is among the volunteers collecting notebooks, markers and pencils, alongside personal care items and toys, to fill shoebox gifts for Samaritan’s Purse’s Operation Christmas Child project.

As local families tackle their back-to-school shopping lists, some area residents are also buying supplies for children in need around the world.

The free event will be held in the West Plains High School parking lot and serves students enrolled in the West Plains R-7 School District as well as surrounding K-8 districts.

Families are invited to prepare for the upcoming academic year at the annual Bridges Back to School Fair, scheduled for 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday.

An author talk, discussion and signing will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Aug. 20 at Lincoln School. Comic book creator Stephane Manuel will discuss the comic's development and the process of translating history into visual storytelling. Copies of the comic will be available for $5. As Stoffel sang the opening notes of "Wood Thrush's Song," a loud clap of thunder sounded outside — almost as if the late artist herself was in resounding agreement with the sentiment that it was one of her very favorite tunes.

Several hundred friends, musicians and community members gathered Friday evening at Hatch Auditorium at the Library Center of Greene County for a tribute celebrating the life and music of Marideth Sisco, a beloved Missouri musician, storyteller and songwriter.
