The "intermediate" level usually involves combining basic strokes into a flow that follows the natural path of the digestive tract. Here is a breakdown of the most effective techniques:
1. The "I Love You" Stroke
This is the gold standard for baby gas relief. You are essentially tracing the letters I, L, and U on their tummy to move gas toward the colon.
I: Start on the right side of the baby's tummy (your left) and stroke a straight line down.
L: Start at the top left (your right), stroke across to the right, and then down.
U: Start at the bottom left, stroke up, across the top, and back down the right side (an inverted 'U').
2. Bicycle Legs
While not a "stroke," this is the most effective way to manually expel gas.
Lay baby on their back.
Gently cycle their legs in a pedaling motion toward their tummy.
Pro Tip: Pause and gently press both knees toward their chest for 5 seconds to help "push" the gas out.
3. Sun and Moon
This rhythmic circular motion helps with overall digestion.
Sun: Use your right hand to make a full circle clockwise around the belly button.
Moon: Use your left hand to make a half-circle (a crescent moon) from about 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock, following the "Sun" hand.
