When You’re Comfortable in Your Own Skin Fabulous Just Is

This article caught my eye for so many reasons.

102! Iris Apfel was 102 when she recently passed. 102 marks a great run, doesn’t it?

But for reasons more personal: I saw, “Iris,” a documentary that opened the New York Film Festival, on a Self in Balance weekend retreat at Mohonk Mountain House, a retreat and a place where I spent many fabulous first January weekends with my Mohonk soul sisters and head soul sister, Anne Elizabeth Quinn.

The last of my reasons ties the first 2 together.

Iris Apfel came into her own or the public eye late in her life. And what a second chapter this self-proclaimed “geriatric starlet” had: She became known as a true celebrity of pop fashion and the talk of New York and beyond following her “Rara Avis: Selections From the Iris Apfel Collection,” her 2005 Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibit that displayed her raid on her closet (82 ensembles and 300 accessories) in the museum’s Costume Institute.

She was showcased in magazine spreads and ad campaigns, sought after on the lecture circuit, attained Instagram stardom (she had 3 million followers), and was an author of 2 coffee table books which shared in words and photos who she was.

And there’s the connection for the 3 reasons this story caught my eye... beyond Iris Apfel’s long run and the bright bombastic of her dress was her energy, her joy, her bold delight in being who she was. She was fabulous just as she was because she was comfortable in her own skin. What better way to live a life at any age?!

And that was all about those January retreats at Mohonk: We moved on from the previous year to catapult ourselves into our best selves for the new year, and we did this year after year. Again, a wonderful, healthy practice at any age and a commitment that served my soul sisters and me well.

In 2010, fashion-designer Duro Olowu told The Guardian that Ms. Apfel’s work had a universal quality. “It’s not a trend,” he said. “It appeals to a certain kind of joy in everybody.”

A certain kind of joy ... What a wonderful statement to make about someone. What a wonderful way to live.

RIP Iris Apfel. Hats off to your incredible spirit and your life well-lived ... and to the lessons you leave for all of us.

She came to fame in the fashion world in her 80s and 90s, and her wildly eclectic closet of clothes formed a hit exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
