Turning off the broadcast feature is an excellent way to limit attacks of opportunity. If a hacker can’t see a network, they won’t be tempted to try to gain access. Another closely related strategy to consider is the simply limit the strength of your Wi-Fi signal to the areas where it is needed. If you can keep the Wi-Fi signal within your building instead of broadcasting outside of it into the public realm, this will also limit the number of users tempted to hack in.

An IT asset management program reduces security and compliance issues because there is a standard template for hardware and software purchases. This program allows IT to have more control over the purchases and make sure that both the hardware, and especially the software, receive regular security updates and fixes. This reduces risk of security vulnerabilities because IT is aware of what equipment and software they have, and can apply updates and patches before they become a serious security issue. An IT asset management program also can reduce or eliminate penalties from failing to adhere to compliance rules and regulations such as software site licenses.

If your IT asset management functions are centralized, you can get bigger discounts on large IT purchases. This also can make a lease program direct with vendors a possibility and allow your organization the ability to use the vendor’s support staff for troubleshooting, support and repairs while the equipment is still under warranty. A lease program that allows a periodic refresh of your IT assets, can make sure that you won’t have to worry about dealing with extra costs associated with support and repair for equipment that is no longer under warranty.

Database Error

Although not foolproof, adding hardware MAC addresses of specific hardware into a database which is filtered via a firewall can do a good job of locking down a wireless network and preventing unauthorized devices and rogue access points on your network. A device’s MAC address needs to be added in order for it to have access.

Sometimes visitors such as vendors or outside support people just need a way to get to the internet to connect to their webmail or research an issue. For these cases a guest Wi-Fi network is a quick and simple option to secure your sensitive, internal information from people outside of the company, while providing them with convenient internet access. Most enterprise Wi-Fi architectures offer a simple way for guest users access while walling them off from internal networks and resources.

Without an IT asset management program, departments or individuals may purchase hardware and software that the IT support staff is not familiar with or even completely unaware of, making troubleshooting a time-consuming process. With an IT asset management program, IT support can capture common issues and create a support system that provides quick and easy resolutions once an issue has be discovered and resolved, reducing duplication of effort on behalf of the IT support staff.

Hey Network Security Vendors - You're Missing Something

I've never really spent any time in Miami Beach so I was looking forward to the Juniper International Partner Conference the first time I attended it there.

Just sat through 2 days of briefings and presentations from some very talented, intelligent and articulate Juniper executives discussing Juniper’s network security vision and the strategy to execute that vision.
I heard that protecting the enterprise network perimeter is almost impossible because most enterprises don’t even know what their perimeter actually looks like. READ MORE…

Understanding VPNs

Virtual Private Networks, the term our industry uses to describe encrypted data tunnels, take many forms. Despite their numerous labels, the VPN serves one primary purpose; protecting data integrity as that data traverses the open internet. VPNs are the mechanism used within our industry to build and maintain information highways across the internet. Point A encrypts, the ‘tunnel’ or VPN transports and point B unencrypts sensitive data. Protecting ‘data at rest’ is one challenge served by a plethora of products such as firewalls, proxies, intrusion prevention solutions, anti-malware systems and the like. ‘Data in motion’ is another story and is best served through the use of data encryption like hashing, symmetric encryption and asymmetric encryption. Network Security Review – 2015 Was Not a Good Year

Fear of a breach similar to the 2014 hacking scandals which brought Sony to its knees, and rocked Target to its core, has pushed IT security to the top priority at a majority of private and publicly traded companies. Even after these titans of industry were digitally compromised, 2015 saw some of the most massive data breaches in history. With so many code exploits on legacy networks, the loss of personal and private information will continue far beyond 2016. Here's a look back at some of the most notable data security failures from 2015. READ MORE…

What to Look for in an IT Relocation Services Company –Part 2

Last month, we covered some of the qualities to look for in an excellent IT relocation services company. If you missed it, check out part 1 of What to Look for in an IT Relocation Services Company here.
Here are some additional qualities that a good IT relocation services company will have:

Experience Setting Up Phone and Video Conferencing Services
The network and physical IT workstations are only part of the relocation process. You need to think about voice and data relocation services as well. Whether you use a standard phone service (POTS) system, voice over IP, or a robust Wi-Fi network capable of supporting Skype or video conferencing, you need experts who know how to install it and configure it for the new location. This involves careful planning and placement of voice and data assets before the move, as well as equipment set-up and configuration after the move.

Careful Packing and Shipping of IT Equipment
IT assets are sensitive and require special care when transporting them to make sure that they are immobilized and protected against weight shifts, bumps during transport, and other hazards during a move. Sensitive electronics need to be packed in anti-static packaging.

Insurance Against Accident and Damage
A good IT relocation services company also carries comprehensive insurance to protect you from unforeseen accidents and damages that occur as a result of the move.

Detailed Plan for Unpacking, Setup and Testing at the New Site
An excellent IT relocation services company has a comprehensive plan in place for the proper placement of all IT assets and office equipment, as well as processes in place to set-up, install, configure and test the equipment at the new location. This company must be good at troubleshooting when the inevitable issues arise with connectivity, installation and proper configuration at the new location.

Getting Ready to Move – Preparing Your Network Technology for Relocation Services
An IT relocation or any sort of network migration requires a lot of preparation in order to assure that bringing your operation back online at the new location goes off without a hitch. Here are a few tips to get your IT equipment ready for relocation before the move.

Survey Existing IT Assets
Look at your existing IT assets and inventory. Which items are getting long in the tooth and ready to be replaced? Which equipment needs constant maintenance and service? Which assets no longer are needed or are not being used because the company has changed direction and decided to go with a different solution?

An IT relocation is the perfect time to reevaluate these assets and determine if they need to be replaced or recycled. Why move them if they are simply going to be put into storage? Before the move is the perfect time for a technology refresh.

Label Everything
During a move identifying each and every item is critical. Make sure all of your equipment has current asset tags and that all critical information such as model numbers, serial numbers, and any other critical operational information (depending on the item) has been captured somewhere. Items which are often overlooked are cables, power adapters and other peripheral equipment.

Make sure that the equipment labels include a location code–whether this is a room or area number–for the new facility to make sure that it ends up in the right place and no guesswork is involved when trying to put everything back together.
Get the New Site Ready Before the Move
It is much harder to install a new network drop if you discover that it is in the wrong place after you’ve moved the workstation. Other issues such as painting, replacing ceiling tiles or running cable are far more challenging to complete after the equipment has been moved to the new site. Work closely with the landlords, engineers, construction workers and service technicians to make sure everything is ready before the move begins.

Have a “Plan B”
There is no such thing as a flawless IT relocation. There are always problems that will need to be addressed: a critical piece of equipment fails, a server node is mislabeled, or a password doesn’t work at the new site locking you out of the system at a critical juncture. Always have a Plan B in place in case of issues that disrupt your operation. Make sure this plan covers all business-critical operations as part of the plan.

IT Relocation Preparation Checklist –The Early Stages
An IT relocation is a complex process with lots of working parts and handoffs to different groups and individuals both within and outside of your company. So get a jumpstart on this process by putting together an IT Relocation Preparation Checklist.

Have an IT Relocation Moving Plan
First of all, there needs to be a plan. An IT relocation is not like moving your desk and filing cabinet. Technology needs infrastructure in order to work properly, and that infrastructure needs to be planned, very early in the process, preferably before any construction begins at your new location. So, work with your IT group, the IT associated with the new location (if applicable), the construction/architects working on the relocation, and service providers (electrical, telecommunications, etc.) and come up with a detailed moving plan with a timeline.

Assess IT Assets – Is It Time for a Technology Refresh?
An office relocation is the perfect time to take a look at your existing technology and assess if it is still meeting your needs. If not, assess your current needs and start pricing out options.

Back-Up All Data Offsite
When in doubt, make a back-up copy of it. It doesn’t matter if it is stored off-site or somewhere in the cloud. That way if something goes wrong–such as equipment gets lost or damaged during the move, and needs to be replaced–you have everything you need to restore the data and get things up and running again.

Know Where You Want Everything to Go
Part of the IT Relocation Plan is making sure that the infrastructure at your new location–electrical, network access, wireless access points, enough space to provide adequate access and cooling, etc.–meets your current needs with some excess for future growth. Work with the new location to make sure that all of these needs are taken care of.

Still Need Help? Hire an IT Relocation Consulting Specialist from Starnet
As you can tell, an IT relocation is a complex process that requires a lot of planning in order to assure success and minimize downtime. Most staff IT professionals only do this once or twice over the course of their career and learn the challenges and pitfalls in real-time. Consider hiring an IT Relocation Consulting Specialist to help guide your staff through the process. They know the typical problems and challenges that this type of project presents that a regular IT professional might overlook. Email us at [email protected], go to our Contacts page and complete our simple online contact form, or call us at 1-800-779-0585 to learn more.
