Liberty's Brenda Strohmer and Westminster's Steve DeFeo are part of Maryland's list of coaches honored by the National Federation of State High School Association.

The NFHS annually honors a Coach of the Year in the top 10 girls sports and top 10 boys sports (by participation numbers), and in two “other” sports, one for boys and one for girls, that are not included in the top 10 listings.

Gerstell Academy eyeing fall sports in 2020 after MIAA, IAAM opt for ‘open season’ athletic slate

The Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (boys sports) and Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (girls), both of which Gerstell is a member, agreed to support a return-to-play strategy that affords its schools the opportunity to create schedules and have competition at their discretion amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

AD Phil Gilotte said he has received early positive feedback from the Gerstell sports community regarding the MIAA/IAAM ruling, and he’s looking forward to athletic competition returning to the Finksburg campus.

Carroll County school board opts to wait another week before voting on high school sports start date

Carroll County Board of Education member Ken Kiler made his motion that CCPS adopt the MPSSAA plan and lobby the MSDE to allow the move to Dec. 7. But no other board members seconded his motion.

Instead, another week will be used to gather more information before they decide.

Duffy talked to the board about the MPSSAA’s suggestion to move things up within the two-semester timeline, noting that “our time is really, really tight” in trying to get something of a fall season together in 2020.

The Carroll Sports Hall of Fame will total 133 members when the Class of 2020 gets officially welcomed next year. But the Hall has lost a handful of past inductees since last November, most recently when Shirl Dorsey Greene died Sept. 13 in Orangeburg, South Carolina, at age 52.

The winter sports season is scheduled to run from Feb. 1 through March 27; the fall season, March 15 through May 8; and the spring season, April 26 through June 19.

The MPSSAA announced Friday that the winter sports season will take place Feb. 1 through March 27; the fall season March 15 through May 8; and the spring season April 26 through June 19.

County government announced in a news release that youth tackle football, basketball, and wrestling will be permitted to return to competition, effective 5 p.m. Friday. That’s in line with Maryland preparing to move into Stage 3 of Gov. Larry Hogan’s coronavirus recovery plan.

The statement said the Centennial is “exploring alternative competition options such as shifting fall athletics to the spring,” and that any updates would be provided as information becomes available.

McDaniel’s fall sports are field hockey, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, and volleyball. The Green Terror feature men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track, men’s and women’s swimming, and wrestling in the winter.

Annual Carroll County summer field hockey skills camp goes on, with modified rules

Taylor said this year’s camp attracted girls from Carroll, Frederick, and Howard counties, as well as players from area private schools. Each girl’s temperature is checked before a daily session, and again if they leave the area and return. Face coverings are required for campers and adults alike.
