Relationships Don’t Compete with Sales—They Power It

A short story

I recently interviewed someone who drew a clear line between sales and relationships—and it hit me: we all want the sale, but we forget the relationship creates it. I’ll accept a connection request and before my finger leaves the button, here comes a pitch. In that moment I’m thinking, we don’t know each other. And my guard goes up.

Here’s what experience keeps teaching me: relationship-building isn’t the opposite of selling. It’s the engine behind sustainable revenue, stronger partnerships, better referrals, and a career that compounds instead of resets. When you make relationships the priority, revenue stops being a sprint and starts becoming a byproduct of trust.

Getting started this week
- Identify five relationships to deepen: two customers, one partner, one mentor, one peer.
- Ask each one specific question to understand their current priorities.
- Deliver one tailored resource to each within 72 hours.
- Replace one “checking in” email with a clear, value-forward suggestion.
- Choose one metric to track monthly: referral introductions, stakeholder depth, or expansion opportunities.

The bottom line
Sales get you a signature. Relationships build your career. Invest in the people behind the logos—consistently, genuinely, and with a bias for being useful—and results won’t just improve; they’ll compound. Deals close. Relationships endure.

Let’s be accountable to this mind-set shift and keep each other accountable to these five things that are simple to do and simple not to do, especially if it isn’t in our DNA. You know how It is; the mind is always resistant to change. So, we must push forward and be conscious and intentional.
