Tonight I've tried the demo of The Beast Inside on Steam Halloween Fest. The game is currently 50% off.
The demo is fairly short but gives one a pretty good idea of the gameplay. It is fairly linear: you can "explore" the surroundings by interacting with the furniture and examining items that appear to be very losely related to the story, but in order to progress you have to follow preset steps.
The scares are aplenty, as can be seen in this short demo, of a jump scare kind, and pretty much in the face (quite literally, at the end).
The interface is intuitive and easy to master, albeit I could do with just "applying" tools to locks versus imitating the act of moving the handles or some such.
One puzzle that we got to see on the demo was difficult to understand. I thought I had a good idea how to handle it, but my approach did not work, and I had to look up the solution for the sake of time.
I have had this game on my wishlist for a while, but I think I am going to give it a pass. The reviews on Steam are very positive, but I've played my share of jump scare games (like The Evil Within) and they don't click well with me. My personal flavor of horror is more like Penumbra or SOMA. However, if you are a fan of the genre, definitely consider The Beast Inside while it is on the Halloween sale.
