Happy 89th birthday to pioneering British primatologist and anthropologist Jane Goodall! A trailblazer in the study of chimpanzee behavior, Dr. Goodall is known worldwide for her animal welfare and conservation efforts, and the establishment of the Jane Goodall Institute. She has been named Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire and a UN Messenger of Peace. The Jane Goodall Institute, founded in 1977, is a non-profit that works to increase global awareness and understanding about the natural world, and in particular the lives and habitats of primates. To this day, Goodall still travels to Gombe frequently and actively encourages the involvement of youth around the world in conservation work, particularly through her "Roots and Shoots" program.
To introduce young children to this trailblazing scientist, we highly recommend the board books "I Am Caring: A Little Book about Jane Goodall" for ages 1 to 4 (https://www.amightygirl.com/i-am-caring) and "Where's Jane" for ages 2 to 5 (https://www.amightygirl.com/where-s-jane), the picture book "Jane Goodall" for ages 5 to 8 (https://www.amightygirl.com/jane-goodall), and the chapter book "Jane Goodall" for ages 4 to 7 (https://www.amightygirl.com/jane-goodall-champion)
For older children and teens, we recommend "Who is Jane Goodall" for ages 8 to 12 (https://www.amightygirl.com/who-is-jane-goodall), an autobiography by Goodall for readers 8 and up entitled "My Life with the Chimpanzees" (https://www.amightygirl.com/my-life-with-the-chimpanzees), and the graphic novel āPrimatesā for ages 12 and up (https://www.amightygirl.com/primates)
Adult readers may appreciate the following works by Dr. Goodall herself: "The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times" (https://amzn.to/2PTVhUl), "In the Shadow of Man" (http://amzn.to/1pFBNcv), and "Reason for Hope: A Spiritual Journey" (http://amzn.to/1uPdiAG)
Jane Goodall is also the focus of a new LEGO Tribute Building Set for ages 10 and up at https://www.amightygirl.com/lego-jane-goodall
For children's books that celebrate more pioneering female environmentalists, visit our blog post "25 Kids' Books About Female Environmentalists" at https://www.amightygirl.com/blog?p=14831
