There was an entire book dedicated to telling this story with details that Genesis summarized in four verses.

The Book of Enoch. Not part of the Protestant canon, but widely read and respected by Second Temple Jews and early Christians. And crucially: it is quoted directly by Jude in the New Testament. Jude quotes Enoch by name and reproduces a prophecy from the book.

And what Enoch says is terrifying.

According to chapters 6-16, a group of 200 angels called the Watchers made a pact on Mount Hermon. These 200 angels were led by a being named Shemihaza. And together they swore an oath: they would descend to earth, take human wives, and teach humanity knowledge that was not meant for them to possess.

Each Watcher had a specialty.

Az**el taught the making of weapons of war — swords, knives, shields — and also cosmetics and jewelry. Others taught enchantments, astrology, the cutting of medicinal roots, and celestial signs.

According to this tradition, the sudden technological advancement of pre-flood humanity was not natural. It was injected. Beings with supernatural knowledge poured centuries of development into a species that was not ready to receive it.

It is like handing a nuclear weapon to a child.
