If you’ve been to the Symphony in the Flint Hills, you know how important Home on the Range is to the event. Each year, the symphony would conclude with the state song of Kansas, the crowd linking arm and arm to sing along. I knew I needed the right version and while the song has long been in the public domain, most versions are copy written by the artist. I reached out to the the Wichita State School of Music here campus to see if they could point me in the right direction. They gave me a contact for Addison Wegerle, who put together the perfect rendition of the film on the violin. Here’s a short clip from our recording.

I was honored to be invited out to Pioneer Bluffs by the Ranchland Trust of Kansas to their annual picnic to show a few excerpts from the documentary.

How fitting that our first sneak peek of the doc was in the heart of the Flint Hills, it was great to hear stories from people about their experiences with Symphony in the Flint Hills!

It was incredibly beneficial for me as I finish editing this project to hear from people who have experienced it themselves.

Today is National Prairie Day, a day to honor one of North America’s most endangered ecosystems.

Once stretching from the Canadian border to Southern Texas, only about 4% of the original Tallgrass prairie remain. Two-thirds of that are in the Flint Hills.

We’re grateful Governor Laura Kelly was willing to sit down with us and talk about her connection to the Symphony in the Flint Hills.

Traditionally, the Kansas governor has been the “honorary chair” of the signature event, a role she’s served in more than her any of her predecessors. Governor Kelly’s connection in particular goes all the way back to the very first event in 2005, when she was first elected to the state house.
