This boss hen isn’t coming in close for a hug. She’s asserting her dominance and reaffirming her position in the pecking order.

Strutting makes her appear larger and more imposing. She’s literally pushing this little Avian-X decoy around.

In addition, the blows to the head say, “I’m the boss and I can hurt you if you try breeding with my Toms.”

Finally, the fighting purrs are trash talk and another warning signal for any other hen to know her place.”

The world of the wild turkey is dynamic and their pecking order is too. Understanding this can make you a better turkey hunter.
