Teaching, Research & International Policy - TRIP Official page of the Teaching, Research, and International Policy (TRIP) Project at William

The TRIP Project at the College of William & Mary surveys scholars of international relations for their opinions on current events, paradigms, questions about the discipline and long-term trends in foreign affairs. Surveys and snap polls from the project are frequently published Foreign Policy magazine, while our journal article database includes over 5,000 pieces written in the top academic journ

als of international relations. TRIP uses these sources of information from to publish papers, blog posts and other works to better bridge the gap between the theory and practice of international relations.

Paging IR scholars at U.S. colleges and universities! For the first time since 2017, TRIP is fielding a multi-country IR faculty survey and we want to hear from you. Check your email to take the survey and give us your thoughts on the IR discipline and current events!

Unlike our very short TRIP Snap Polls that we have fielded recently, this is a longer and more comprehensive survey about the discipline as well as current world affairs. The survey is longer, in part, because we have embedded questions from 8 teams of (mostly) early-career IR scholars from across the discipline so that they can address a variety of questions related to their own research agendas.

Over the past 10 month, we surveyed at U.S. universities and colleges on three separate occasions about the likelihood of a Chinese attack on Taiwan. Across all three surveys, IR experts' predictions remained remarkably stable, reporting that a Chinese attack on Taiwan is far less likely than a Russian attack on Ukraine was.

What are the consequences of the war in Ukraine for potential Chinese military action in Taiwan? Almost half of the experts surveyed judged that China was no more or less likely to use force against Taiwan or Taiwanese military forces than it was prior to the Russian invasion. When asked how the US should respond if China attacked Taiwan, IR experts were stable over time in the order of their preferences for different policy tools and displayed a preference for increasingly assertive policies in East Asia after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Results from our latest snap poll show that are nearly unanimous in their opposition to the establishment and enforcement of a no-fly zone over Ukraine, concerned that such a policy could increase the risk of escalation.

IR experts estimated that establishing a no-fly zone would increase the probability that Russia would employ nearly every military escalation tactic asked in the survey, from the use of chemical or biological weapons against Ukrainians to the use of nuclear weapons against NATO countries.

New blog for TRIP RA Angelina Paul on the state of democracy world wide. Over 34 percent of the population now living under an autocracy. Is the US the blame and is there anything that can be done?

The U.S., a beacon of democracy, is falling short, as other nations criticize the U.S. for having a negative impact on global democracy. Is the “Biden effect” alone strong enough to shift the world away from autocracy?

When we surveyed IR scholars in April 2020, 80% of scholars said that the US's role in coordinating the international response to COVID-19 was not effective at all. In April 2021, respondents think the US is doing better, but are still not thrilled with Biden's approach.

Today, we are excited to introduce Zenobia Goodman ! Below, Zenobia will tell you a bit about herself and why she decided that TRIP is the place for her:

“Hi All! My name is Zenobia Goodman and I am a rising junior at the College! I am studying International Relations with a minor in Global Education and I hope to go into International Development! I joined TRIP in Spring 2020 and I am so glad that I did. I was initially drawn to TRIP because of its focus on bridging the gaps between academia and policy while making information accessible to the public. During my time at TRIP I have had the opportunity to conduct research, write for our blog, and make connections between history and research. TRIP has provided me with so many valuable experiences and skills that I know that I will use for the rest of my life. My favorite thing about working at TRIP is definitely the people! I have made amazing friends during my time at TRIP and I can’t wait to see where this upcoming Fall takes us! Outside of TRIP, I am a member of the International Relations Club, Chi Omega, a social sorority on campus and a community service organization called Aim 4. I can also be found giving a tour on campus or volunteering as a classroom assistant at a local elementary school. TRIP has been such an amazing addition to my already amazing W&M experience and I have enjoyed every second of it!!

Today, we are excited to introduce Morgan Doll! Below, Morgan will tell you a bit about herself and why she decided that TRIP is the place for her:

"Hello!! My name is Morgan Doll and I am a rising junior (whoa) studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics. I joined TRIP in Fall 2019, and I cannot imagine my W&M experience without it! TRIP has exposed me to the complex relationships between academia, policymakers, and the media in the field of IR -- something I didn’t know anything about before I joined TRIP, but now notice and ponder all the time! While reading countless Op-Ed Articles last fall, I started to piece together historic and current events that passed over me in news cycles and history class. Thus, researching for TRIP has given me an invaluable, deeper understanding of world events, history, and government. My favorite TRIP memory is the cookout we had for the Foreign Affairs Journalists and Scholars Conference where I got to interact with the journalists and scholars that I had been reading all semester. Something I didn’t expect to gain from a research position is another support system on campus; our small team really bonds during our weekly meetings and overlapping work hours, and it's the best. When I’m not working on the GRI’s front porch, you will find me laughing in the Kappa Alpha Theta House where I serve as the Human Resources Director, singing camp songs on the Sunken Gardens with Camp Kesem W&M, or walking around CW with any of the wonderful people who make W&M feel like home."

Today, we are excited to introduce Mary Trimble! Below, Mary will tell you a bit about herself and why she decided that TRIP is the place for her:

"Hey friends! My name is Mary Trimble, and I’m a rising sophomore at W&M! I plan to double major in European Studies and French and Francophone Studies, and I’ve worked at TRIP since February 2020. I got involved with in the fall of my freshman year, when I became the administrative assistant to the front office. The energy, verve, and innovative spirit of those I watched from my perch at the front desk inspired me to get involved in research! I connected with TRIP’s goal of bridging the policy-practice divide and appreciated the exposure to different career paths, from academia to think tanks to journalism. I came for the research, but stayed for the people. I’m lucky to have such a warm and collaborative work environment where I’m encouraged to pursue my interests on the TRIP blog, ask hard-to-answer questions, and develop new skills among smart, driven, and hilarious peers. Around campus, I’m also an Assoc. News Editor for The Flat Hat and a Tribe Ambassador with the Office of Undergrad Admissions, and next semester I’ll be a Resident Assistant with Res Life! In my free time, I can be found watching British television, playing James Taylor songs on my guitar, cheering on Tribe Football, and continuing my hunt for the best cappuccino in the ‘Burg. And FWIW, my Cheese Shop order is a prosciutto and provolone on gluten free."

The first Research Assistant we are excited to introduce is Maggie Manson! Below, Maggie will give a bit of insight into what working at TRIP is like and why she decided that this was the place for her:

“Hi all! My name is Maggie Manson, I am a rising junior at the College majoring in International Relations and Middle Eastern Studies. I have worked at TRIP since September 2019 and I thoroughly enjoy working with TRIP data, collecting new data, and especially writing for the TRIP RA Blog! I was initially drawn to apply for TRIP because of my dual interest in policy making and IR academia. Through the TRIP project, I have discovered how the two intersect and how both practitioners and academics can better bridge the gap between theory and policy. I have also been able to explore my own research interests through the TRIP RA blog where I have written about foreign aid, U.S. foreign policy towards Israel, and how COVID-19 has affected global protest movements. Outside of TRIP, I am also a research assistant under Professor Grewal for the Armed Responses to Mobilization Or Revolution (ARMOR) project, the Assistant Chair of Administration for the W&M Undergraduate Honor Council, Political Correspondent for the Flat Hat student newspaper, and member of the International Relations Club. In my free time, I enjoy dancing, bullet journaling, listening to way too many podcasts, and attempting to keep my excessive plant collection alive.”

Happy Juneteenth from the TRIP Project! Juneteenth commemorates the Union General Gordon Granger reaching the state of Texas in 1865 with federal orders, finally proclaiming all slaves in the United States free. Here at the TRIP Project we understand the importance of using our platform to promote anti-racism as well as creating a space to disseminate information and educate others. During the 155th celebration of Juneteenth we encourage you to take some time today to reflect on the importance of this day and take the time to educate those around you.

This is a simple yet powerful tool to help students and researchers find their focus. It lets you "see the invisible" (what is missing from the literature) and to accelerate the development of more useful/effective knowledge/theory.
