⛈️Damaging winds of 80+ mph and large hail are the main threats for this evening, but the possibility of a tornado in our area can’t be ruled out.
Make sure you take the time now to secure any outdoor belongings, consider postponing any travel late this evening with a high profile vehicle or attachments, bring your pets inside, and if you are recreating outdoors like camping or boating, you are encouraged to pack up early to avoid property damage and potential injuries due to the high winds expected.
⚡️Please also be prepared for intermittent power outages.

👷🏼SKYWARN Trained Weather Spotters:
Please assist the NWS if you are safely able to do so. SKYWARN spotter reports provide vital "ground truth" to the NWS. They act as their eyes and ears in the field. Spotter reports help our meteorologists issue timely, accurate, and detailed warnings by confirming hazardous weather detected by NWS radar.
Spotters also provide critical verification information that helps improve future warning services. SKYWARN Spotters serve their local communities by acting as a vital source of information when dangerous storms approach.

📲If you don’t already have it, we encourage you to download the free FEMA Mobile App and input your location by zip code to receive real-time emergency alerts. You can save up to 5 locations in your app for receiving notifications.

⛈️Segment Shelter Coordinators were notified by our Mass Care Specialist to maintain situational awareness on the severe weather conditions expected for the evening hours and will be on standby to open their shelters. (See comments section for Flyer of Shelter Locations)

85-100 mph gusts from t-storms possible ⚠️ NEW INTENSITY CATEGORY INTRODUCED: This is an additional detail added to the Storm Prediction Center's (SPC) outlooks this year. Today's main threat is going to be damaging wind gusts with the INTENSITY 2 shaded black area in the southwest (including New Town, Dickinson, Bowman, Baker, and Wibaux) meaning that a bow echo or derecho is possible with max gusts greater than 85 mph! Timing window for this is 6-10pm CDT.
SPC discussion: "A linear cluster of thunderstorms is expected to evolve during the late afternoon into potentially a bow echo during the early evening with the severe-wind risk notably increasing and becoming more widespread. Have increased the intensity highlight from southeast MT into western portions of ND where it seems increasingly probable a swath of intense gusts ---possibly a bow echo--- is progged by a diverse array of different model cores/runs this morning... Localized peak gusts may range 85-100 mph. Considered an upgrade to Moderate Risk... This activity will sweep northeastward during the evening with a gradual lessening of the wind/hail hazard towards the early overnight as it moves east into the eastern half of the Dakotas late."

‼️NORTH DAKOTA, MONTANA‼️

‼️TIME: 4PM-12AM‼️

Today's setup isn't a major tornado outbreak, but it is one worth watching closely if you're in eastern Montana or western North Dakota.
The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted parts of the region with a 2% tornado risk, meaning an isolated tornado can't be ruled out—especially if a storm can remain isolated and tap into the very warm, unstable air in place.
Temperatures climbing well into the 90s, combined with increasing moisture and strong winds aloft, will create an environment capable of supporting severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.

Main threats include: 🧊 Large hail up to ping pong ball size or larger
💨 Damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph
🌪️ A low, but non-zero tornado risk (2%)
⚡ Frequent lightning and heavy rain

The greatest concern appears to be across eastern Montana into far western and northwestern North Dakota, where storms developing along a surface trough could quickly become severe.
As always, remember that a 2% tornado risk doesn't sound like much, but in the Northern Plains it only takes one storm in the right environment to produce a tornado.

We finally had the chance to try out the new Pita Factory in Williston ND and it did not disappoint!

I ordered the Beef Gyro, and my boyfriend went with the Crowley steak pita. Both were absolutely delicious, packed with flavor, and made fresh. The food was amazing, but what really stood out was the incredible hospitality. The owner was so kind and welcoming, which made the experience even better. 😊

If you're in the Williston area and looking for something new to try, I highly recommend stopping by and giving them a visit. Be sure to check out their page, give them a follow, and help spread the word about this fantastic local business!
Trust me—your taste buds will thank you! 🌯❤️

...SUMMARY...
Thunderstorms with large hail, severe wind gusts, and a few
tornadoes will be possible this afternoon and evening in parts of
the northern Plains into upper Mississippi Valley. More sporadic
occurrences of large hail and severe wind gusts appear possible
across parts of the central High Plains and southwest Texas into
southern New Mexico.
..Northern Plains...
Morning water v***r loop shows an upper low over southern Alberta,
with several shortwave troughs embedded in the southwesterly flow over MT/WY/ID. At the surface, the primary cold front will move
eastward into the central Dakotas and northwest NE by afternoon,
providing the focus for scattered thunderstorm development.

A broad cluster of weakening thunderstorms is occurring this morning
near the NE/SD border. This activity has resulted in an outflow
boundary that will lift northward into SD this afternoon. Dewpoints
in the upper 60s and MLCAPE over 3000 J/kg are expected in the
region along/north of the outflow boundary, with forecast soundings
showing favorable deep-layer shear for supercell storms. These
storms will persist through the evening, affecting eastern SD,
southeast ND, and western MN. Large hail is the primary risk early,
with a transition to more linear structures during the evening and
an attendant damaging wind risk. Recent model guidance suggests a
notable low-level jet in this region during the late
afternoon/evening, supportive of some risk of maintaining discrete
modes and increasing the risk of a few tornadoes.
