The grocery bill is where affordability policy becomes personal — and where the argument for the Affordability Agenda for America is easiest to make.

Grocery prices aren't driven by one factor. They're driven by the cumulative effect of government policy decisions across every input in the food supply chain.

Energy prices — up 21% since 2020 — affect fertilizer, farm equipment, refrigeration, and trucking. Every step of getting food from farm to shelf runs on energy, and expensive energy means expensive food. Labor mandates raise costs for farm workers, processors, and grocery employees. Regulations add compliance expenses that fall hardest on smaller producers who can't absorb them. The Jones Act — which restricts shipping between U.S. ports to U.S.-built, U.S.-owned, U.S.-crewed vessels — raises transportation costs and passes them to consumers, especially in Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.

And underlying all of it: federal spending that fuels inflation, eroding the purchasing power of every dollar an Ohio family earns.

The Affordability Agenda addresses every link in that chain. Reduce government spending. Repeal the Jones Act. Protect and expand the Working Families Tax Cuts. Streamline energy permitting to bring electricity costs down across every sector that depends on it.

The checkout counter is where all of these policies converge. The Affordability Agenda is the only comprehensive answer to what's driving that total up.

Two.

San Francisco tried it. Rentals dropped 15%. Rents went up 5.1% citywide. The argument for government-run housing, government grocery stores, and $34 trillion in new federal healthcare spending isn't that it's new. It's that somehow it'll work this time.

That's not an argument. That's a hope.

More homes. More competition. More patient control. That's what the evidence supports.

The housing affordability crisis has a clear cause that most politicians won't state plainly because it implicates decisions made at every level of government they've been part of. 📈

Here it is plainly: overly burdensome housing, land-use, and zoning regulations are the primary driver of today's high housing costs. Not the market. Not greedy developers. Government rules that restrict what can be built, where it can be built, and how dense communities can become — artificially limiting supply even as demand grows.

The result is predictable and well-documented. Higher prices for renters. Homeownership out of reach for millions. An American Dream that has become a regulatory privilege rather than a market good.

The Affordability Agenda for America proposes the correct solution set. Repeal the federal mandates dictating building materials and techniques that drive up construction costs. Allow more manufactured housing. Allow higher-density zoning. Make federal housing funds conditional on states and localities actually reforming the rules creating artificial scarcity. Repeal the prevailing wage requirements in government contracts that increase project costs by 10% with zero corresponding benefit to quality.

The housing supply problem is solvable. Every policy tool needed to solve it is available. What's been missing is the political honesty to acknowledge that the problem was created by government — and that government reform is the only path out.

The healthcare argument most politicians make is designed to sound like a solution while preserving the system that created the problem.
Let me make the honest one instead.

Seventy percent of Americans say healthcare is broken. Premiums have risen faster than inflation and wages for decades. And the reason isn't mysterious — roughly 90% of healthcare spending flows through third-party payers — insurance companies and government programs — instead of directly through patients.

When patients don't control the dollars, providers don't have to compete for them. When providers don't compete, prices don't come down. The system grows. Premiums grow. And families pay more every year for coverage that gives them less control.

The Affordability Agenda for America proposes the correct solution: fund patients, not the system. Universal access to tax-free health savings accounts. Expansion of direct primary care — which functions like a subscription to your own doctor and cuts out the insurance middleman. Association health plans that let small businesses and independent workers pool coverage. Direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical sales.

When patients control healthcare dollars, providers compete for patients. When providers compete, prices come down and transparency goes up.

The diagnosis is correct. The prescription follows from it logically. The only thing standing between this agenda and lower healthcare costs for American families is political will.
