It took me a long time to realize that not every argument is worth having.
Arguing with a narcissist can be exhausting because their goal often isn’t to discover the truth—it’s to win, control the conversation, or make you feel smaller. They’ll interrupt you, then accuse you of interrupting them. They’ll move the goalposts, twist your words, and leave you questioning yourself. It’s less of a discussion and more of a competition they refuse to lose.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that arguing with someone who isn’t open to learning is redundant. You can’t reason someone out of a position they didn’t reason themselves into, and you can’t force growth on someone who has no interest in self-reflection.
These days, I’m much more selective about who gets access to my time and energy. I surround myself with people who can handle criticism without taking it as an attack. People who can say, “I was wrong,” or “I don’t know,” without feeling threatened. Those are the conversations that make everyone wiser.
Growth doesn’t come from always being right. It comes from being willing to be wrong.
Protect your peace. Choose your battles. And invest your energy in people who value truth more than ego.
