On July 14, 2012, President Barack Obama walked onto an outdoor stage at the historic Walkerton Tavern and Gardens in Glen Allen, Virginia, tieless, sleeves rolled to his elbows, wearing the blue button-down that had become part of his campaign-trail image.

Within minutes, the sky opened.

Rain poured down on him, on the microphone, and on the nearly 900 supporters who had gathered on a Saturday to hear him make the case for a second term. Obama did not leave. He did not ask for an umbrella. He stood there, soaked through, and kept speaking.

Virginia mattered. In 2008, he had carried the state for the first Democratic presidential win there since 1964, and in 2012 he was fighting to hold it. For two straight days, he had been campaigning across Virginia, drawing sharp contrasts with Republican nominee Mitt Romney on background, values, and vision for the country.

So when the storm came, it did not interrupt the message. It became the message.

As the rain intensified midway through his remarks, Obama looked out at the drenched crowd and calmly told them that everyone was already wet, so it no longer mattered. Earlier, with the easy warmth that had long defined his connection with campaign audiences, he apologized to the women in the crowd for what the rain was doing to their hair, joking that the campaign might have to treat everyone to a salon visit when it was over.

The photographs from that afternoon quickly became some of the most memorable images of the 2012 campaign: Obama wiping rain from his face mid-sentence, supporters huddled under umbrellas and plastic sheets, no one leaving.

It was a moment no advance team could have staged and no opponent could have replicated.

A president standing calmly in the storm.

A crowd choosing to stay.

And a campaign message, made visible without a single extra word: he was not going anywhere.
