It’s Big Rock Week in Morehead City!

Each year in early June, Morehead City comes alive as the waterfront fills with anticipation for the return of the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament. Big Rock Week opens with tradition, starting with the Keli Wagner Lady Angler Tournament.

By Monday morning, the rhythm shifts: crews gather before dawn, boats head offshore, and the chase begins, lines in at 9 a.m., lines out at 3 p.m., as the fleet pursues blue marlin across the Atlantic.

Back on the docks, it’s a showcase of craftsmanship and competition, with everything from custom sportfishers to production boats lining the inlet, and weigh-ins drawing crowds daily via Big Rock TV.

But Big Rock is more than fishing. It’s a full waterfront celebration — family events, community gatherings, live music, and the unmistakable energy of Morehead City at its peak.

Join in on Big Rock this month and July in Morehead City:
June 5–6: 29th Annual Keli Wagner Lady Angler Tournament
June 8–14: 68th Annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament
July 8–11: 6th Annual Big Rock Kids Billfish Tournament

SailGP Returns to New York to Kick Off Summer of Sports

The Rolex SailGP Championship is back in New York this weekend (May 30–31) for the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix—one of the most iconic stops on the calendar—bringing high-speed racing to the Hudson River with the Manhattan skyline and Statue of Liberty as the backdrop.

More than 6,000 fans are expected along the waterfront and on spectator boats for two days of world-class racing as identical F50 foiling catamarans hit speeds up to 60 mph in one of the most technical and demanding courses on the circuit.

With the season heating up, all eyes are on the leaderboard. Australia’s BONDS Flying Roos arrive on a winning streak, Spain’s Los Gallos continue their rise into title contention, and Germany builds momentum after a breakthrough podium finish. Meanwhile, the U.S. SailGP Team returns home sitting fourth overall, looking to turn local energy into a breakthrough result in front of the New York crowd.

Expect tight racing, shifting Hudson River winds, and split-second decisions as the fleet battles for crucial points heading into the back half of the 2026 season.

Happy Memorial Day, Great Lakers!

A day on the water with your dog can be an incredible experience, but it’s not without risks. Unsteady surfaces, heat, and overestimating your dog’s swimming ability is dangerous. As a Canine Lifestyle Expert and professional dog trainer with 25 plus years' experience, Denise Holmes knows how important training and preparation are. To keep your pets safe this boating season, on one of the biggest boating days of the year, we’re featuring some of Holmes’ best advice to have a happy and safe Memorial Day.

From buying the right type of canine PDF, packing a well-equipped boat bag for your pet, and knowing the key signs of both heat stroke and heat exhaustion, we’ve got everything you need to know in our Launch issue feature on How to Be a Boat Dog, found in our digital magazine and on our website. Update for our techy boaters! Argo has released Argo 3, the most significant update to the marine navigation platform since its launch. The new version rebuilds the foundation of the app to deliver faster maps, clearer charts, and new data capabilities designed to help boaters plan routes and understand conditions more easily.

At the center of Argo 3 is an entirely new base map designed to improve both performance and readability. Panning, zooming, switching layers, and building routes are noticeably faster, even in busy waterways.

Argo 3 also introduces integrated wind, rain and lightning data directly within the navigation chart, allowing boaters to see conditions in context with their route and surrounding waterways. The new platform architecture also enables additional weather layers to be added soon, including waves, currents and water temperature.

Hurricane prep isn’t a one-day job — it’s a full game plan 🌪️⚓

In Outwitting the Perfect Storm, we break down what it really takes to protect your boat, your property, and your people along the Southeast coast—where storm surge, shallow waters, and year-round boating make preparation essential.

🛥️ Start early (even before you buy)
From checking cleats and lines to understanding your insurance and emergency contacts, the foundation of storm prep starts long before hurricane season.

📋 Before the season begins
Have a plan—and share it.
Know where your boat will go, how it’ll be secured, and who can step in if you can’t get there. Bonus points if you’ve actually practiced it.

🌊 When a storm is coming
This is where it all counts:
• Double up lines and account for surge
• Remove canvas + secure loose gear
• Move your boat inland if possible
• Prep bilge pumps, batteries, and drainage

From canal strategies to trailering tips, this guide covers the before, during, and after—so you’re not scrambling when it matters most.

Important updates for cruisers! The Seven Seas Cruising Association (SSCA) has released a new advocacy letter outlining key legislative developments impacting boaters across Florida and the Southeast—and it’s worth paying attention.

Here are a few highlights:
🌴 In Florida, HB1103 gives local officers more authority over derelict vessels and long-term anchoring permits—with potential expansions on the horizon
📍 Alabama is considering SB326, which could shift anchoring regulation authority to law enforcement
⚓ South Carolina’s Bill 3771 now includes seaworthiness survey requirements for extended anchoring
🚫 A strict abandoned vessel bill in Wisconsin (SB250) failed—but could resurface in the future

The bigger picture? Ongoing efforts to regulate anchoring and cruising continue to evolve and groups like the SSCA are actively working to protect boater rights through advocacy and coalition efforts.

👉 Read the full letter and get all the details at our blog (link in bio!)

Staying informed is key, and these changes could shape how and where we cruise in the years ahead.
