SHE COULDNโT SPEAK โ SO NO ONE HEARD HER DIE ๐
THE DEATH OF AALIYAH FORTNER (23) | ABUSE CASE IN NORTH CAROLINA GROUP HOME
In October 2025, 23-year-old Aaliyah Michelle Fortner, a nonverbal autistic woman living in a North Carolina group home, died in a case later ruled by investigators as homicide involving prolonged abuse and severe neglect.
Emergency responders found Aaliyah in critical condition, severely malnourished and weighing only around 84 pounds, with medical reports confirming long-term physical trauma and extreme deprivation of care.
Court documents allege that over the months leading to her death, she was subjected to repeated physical abuse, restraint injuries, blunt-force trauma, and severe neglect, including failure to provide adequate food and medical attention. Prosecutors say her condition worsened steadily, indicating an ongoing pattern of harm rather than a single incident.
Authorities later charged caregivers connected to the facility, including one individual with first-degree murder, and others with abuse and neglect-related offenses after the medical examiner ruled her death resulted from severe malnutrition combined with physical trauma.
Because Aaliyah was nonverbal, she had no way to speak, report abuse, or ask for help, leaving her entirely dependent on the people entrusted with her care.
๐ A life that should have been protected was instead left to suffer in silence.
๐๏ธ Rest in peace, Aaliyah Fortner
