The Charles R. Beggs Activity Center will be closed for annual fall cleaning. The Winfit Fitness Center will be closed from August 20-23, and the entire facility (including registration) will be closed from August 21-23.

St. John's Church was struck by lightning. Christ Daleiden and William Zeier climbed on the roof to fight the fire but Father Wiederhold forced them to come down.

Today in History - August 14, 1952

In response to the Village crackdown on speeding, it seems some residents did not approve. Today's article from August 1952 is titled: Vandals Steal Speed Limitation Sign: "The new speed limit signs which have been placed along Winfield main roads seem to exasperate some of the citizens. The sign at the entrance to town, on Manchester Road just east of the creek, has been stolen together with the post on which it was mounted. Councilman Martin Grothaus has asked that all be alert to find the vandals. Should you see anyone tampering with the speed signs, please call Mr. Grothaus.
