The Blue Moon Drive-In Theatre
Update on the Drive-in: A lot was affected by whatever happened but the most important was the projectors which was where i needed to start before anything else mattered. These arenโt in any way simple devices and all the parts are rare and expensive and itโs not a good idea to just start buying parts without being sure it would be a fix. After spending the day troubleshooting I had a handle on what the specifics where and spent the night calling in favors and driving around the countryside getting the pieces needed to put a picture back on the screen. As of this morning both projectors are back up and running, however, it takes more than a picture to show a movie and there is still problems with the 1 digital sound processor and 1 transmitter. Hopefully I can have that fixed by next weekend. So as of now after taking parts from each booth 1 screen is back up. Now Iโm waiting on call backs on other things I need but we are in a good position to be back up soon.
After getting a handle on the projection systems I had to go through and find out what else was effected. Some of the stuff isnโt actually needed to operate and some things are. We have 4 air conditioners. 1 central, 2 small units that protect the projectors and 1 smaller one to supplement that snack bar. The 3 small ones had burnt out gfci plugs and was easily fixed. The central unit needs a new control board and capacitor which isnโt that bad. The 2 registers needed new ac to dc transformers. 2 30 amp breakers in the panel wouldnโt reset and needed to be replaced. All the dc transformers in the security camera system were burnt out but easily replaced, 3 monitors out, slush machine is out, refrigerated drink dispenser, a router that connects the projector and 2 daisy chained WiFi routers in the lot. I think thatโs probably all. Everything was on surge protectors and those surge protectors arenโt working now. Anything hooked into battery backup surge protection survived and regular surge strips didnโt.
So with all this it can all be fixed. Itโs bad but definitely could have been worse. This was a horrible season filled with bad weather weekends and movies that werenโt that appealing but weโll be back open soon enough to finish it off with Freaky Friday and some retro Halloween movies.
Thanks to everyone who commented support and letting us know that people still care about this place. Sometimes I wonder if people still care whether drive-ins stick around or not. Drive-ins arenโt for everyone but for some people they mean a lot. I appreciate the offers for donations and the gofundme suggestions and it has nothing to do with pride but I just believe if a Drive-in, or really any business, needs to make it then it should be able to make it without taking peopleโs money they worked hard for. If you do want to help keep this place open, or any drive-in, just come watch a movie or tell a friend. Maybe share a post.
Fun fact: this drive in was originally the Gu-Win Drive-in and lasted 30 years before going out of business in 1986. The Blue Moon Drive-in reopened in 1996 and we will be starting our 30th year in 5 months. ๐ค
Anyways, gotta get back to work.
