Not Really Fake News

Recent conversations on various topics have digressed to some form of comment on “fake news” — which brings me back to something I have long said: It is not that the media are lying, but they too often rely on a piece of the truth without adequately delving into the full story.

Overwhelming Opposition Voiced Against Dalton Landfill

WHITEFIELD — Members of the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services’ Wetlands Bureau heard nearly six hours of testimony from citizens on Monday, with the majority of the speakers registering opposition to a proposed landfill in the adjacent town of Dalton. With chants of “Do the right thing — deny!” protesters from Whitefield, Dalton, Bethlehem, and Littleton, as well as more distant locations, gathered outside White Mountains Regional High School ahead of the hearing to emphasize that a landfill near a state park and pristine lake is the worst of options....

Windham Election Results Validated

CONCORD — A forensic review of Windham’s election results confirmed the accuracy of the state’s recount of the Rockingham District 7 state representative’s race, according to the report from the Forensic Election Audit Team which Secretary of State William M. Gardner and Attorney General John M. Formella received on July 12. The integrity of the election came under scrutiny after a recount showed that seven of the eight candidates for the seat picked up about 300 votes each, while the person asking for the recount, Democrat Kristi St....

Community Celebrates Whitewater Park Groundbreaking

FRANKLIN — What has been an intangible dream is becoming a tangible reality with Monday’s groundbreaking ceremony to launch the construction of a kayak surf wave in the Winnipesaukee River and stadium seating in Trestle View Park. Marty Parichand, executive director of the nonprofit Mill City Park at Franklin Falls, told the roughly 100 people attending the ceremony that he was happy to be there talking about the tangibles — the whitewater park and other features that are being developed along a segment of the Winnipesaukee River — but, he said, “the intangibles are even better.”...

Forensics Team: No Partisan Bias

The Forensic Election Audit Team established by the Attorney General’s Office to look into potential election fraud in Windham filed its report on July 12, confirming the accuracy of the state’s recount of the Rockingham District 7 state representative’s race. The team found “no basis to believe that the miscounts found in Windham indicate a pattern of partisan bias or a failed election,” the report states.

Visionaries Are Bringing Back The Mill City

The city of Franklin has been struggling to redefine itself since the last of the mills that drove the local economy closed a half-century ago. Twenty-five years later, leaders were looking to the past as a way of revitalizing the city: Passenger rail and a renovated opera house were supposed to provide the catalyst for Franklin’s rebirth. Today, it is a vision of the future that finally promises to pull the Three Rivers City out of its doldrums....

Fossil-Free Steel Production

Inside Clean Energy reports that a joint venture between a steel company, a mining company, and an electricity producer, known as HYBRIT, has succeeded in a pilot program to produce a form of iron using an almost-emissions-free process. By using renewable energy to produce hydrogen, then using that hydrogen with iron ore pellets, they have produced what is known as “sponge Iron,” which Martin-Lindqvist, the president and chief executive officer of SSAB, called “a critical step on the road to fossil-free steel.”
